Please talk to me about The Health Exchange/ Obamacare?

I've heard horror stories. My husband and I have to join. I have heard it is hard to find a dr that will take it and that our hospital of choice, Stony Brook, doesn't take it. Can you share your experience, good or bad?

I don't have it (was able to keep our privately purchased insurance for another year) but when I was looking into it, not one of my doctors took it.

The best thing to do is go in the website and get a broker through them to help you. Trying to navigate it on your own gets confusing. Go to website, call number to get broker and give that broker all info needed including your current drs. They will do the work for you.

Research research research. We have had no problems with Obamacre so far.

We chose health republic. And I think that is the only one stonybrook is now taking. It is also the only one with no deductible... It is through magnacare and al of ym docs are on it...

So far so good. Not everyone has a horror story...

Speaking from the doctors office end, it sucks. That said, NS/LIJ has a few plans that are really pretty good.

Probably depends on the plan you chose. I have it, Fidelis Silver. $250 deductible and inexpensive copays. Easy to sign up online and pay your monthly premium right on the site. Quick to get me my cards. Good customer service. Stony Brook doesn't take it, but they also don't take many non exchange plans either, and haven't for years.

I've found what I need thus far as far as a primary goes. No referrals required, which I like. But, I have had a problem with them listing doctors on their site that don't take the plan. So before you choose, call your doctors, or who you want them to be, and ask. I have yet to find a gyno I would be happy with. My past doesn't take it (Stony Brook affiliated). They have a huge island wide practice listed, and had it listed when I signed up, but that practice doesn't take it.

I have also found many offices are extremely rude when you call to ask if they accept it. Not even sure why!

My parents have it and were happy to end up paying less and having lower copays and rx costs. My mom ended up need a lot of medical care right after they got it and so far so good. She had some issues finding a surgeon bc there were only a few options and she ended up choosing one far from home but amazing! I'm sure it will be a while before they know how much two surgeries and all kinds of other procedures will cost them in the end but so far things have been good.

Do NOT rely on the website to check if your Dr participates. I have been getting emails from my ped and a few other offices to all their patients saying saying "that while many plans list them the do not take most of them. Please call us before you chose your plan." I asked out of curious it and was told many people signed up thinking their drs were in the plan only to find that none listed actually took it. So I just recommend you check if that is important to you.

With my parents they were told by some doctors that they take certain plans, but no the health exchange version of them. On the other side though, there were doctors who told them they don't take the plan and they found out through the insurance company that they in fact did. Definitely do your research and be thorough!

This! I know my ped said there was confusion on both ends (per their mass email). I just know not to rely on the website exclusively. But I say this to any insurance. We had to switch dental plans a while ago when my DH's job changed the plans. Aetna had several dentists listed under a specific plan. I called the office to find they hadn't taken it in like 3 years!!!!

My brother's SO has a plan and suddenly had a major health issue, Stony Brook did take it. Just call and ask, and call doctors to be sure. I think everyone is trying to figure things out and it takes a while.

They take any insurance in the event of an emergency.

Call the Health and Welfare Council. They are authorized navigators and will help you at NO charge. The last time I checked Stony Brook was only taking one of the NY State of Health plans (there are 8 being offered in Suffolk).

Re: Please talk to me about The Health Exchange/ Obamacare?

I have to say that I haven't paid much attention to this since I have great insurance through the NSLIJ health system, however, I know for a fact that the program I work for is trying to work things out with all insurance providers we get referrals for. We are a very specialized program here on LI. I think where we run into issues is that many insurance providers only allow a certain # of visits. Sometimes more can be justified by the program. FWIW, this has always been the case, well before the changeover. I of course will advocate looking into the NSLIJ plans since I work there and think their doctors and programs tend to be excellent overall. I know I've gotten emails about open houses to explain their insurances in more detail.

You can also purchase ACA compliant plans off the exchange through a broker/agent. They may be able to shed more light and you may be able to get a richer plan with a broader network. The only thing is that plans sold off the exchange are not eligible for the government subsidy.

Many insurers are offering ACA compliant plans with narrow networks (fewer providers) to limit costs to the insured (which is what it seems is being referenced above).
