My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
My dad is a stage four throat cancer survivor. He owns a small business and had the same exact health insurance policy since 1972. It was so comprehensive, required no referrals, pre-approvals or limits on tests. Well part of Obamacare allows health insurance companies to DROP people with pre-existing because new companies have to pick them up now. So after 40 years of huge premiums and virtually zero use of benefits until 2009 when my dad got sick, they dropped him. He now has Oxford for about a month. He went last week to his Otolaryngologist/Oncologist last week for his annual PET scan and when he got there they told him Oxford doesnt think its necessary so he should have a cat scan instead! Thank god his doctor is a a leader in field and after seeing the cat scan he got on the phone with oxford and told them the PET scan IS medically necessary. They said they will send it to the review board. Meanwhile my dad knew skipping the PET scan was not the right thing so he paid for it himself.
Turns out something in his throat lit up and his cancer might be back. If it were up to Obamacare my dad probably would have missed a chance to catch a very deadly cancer early.
I understand parts of obamacare are working for some people, but it has not been good for everyone. In fact it has severely decreased excellent, affordable healthcare for some people!

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
I am so sorry to hear this.
Obamacare has also resulted in extensive caps for services there was no caps for. For example allied health. If a person suffers a stroke and needs OT/PT/and Speech, services are now capped and PT and speech are combined now, so patients only get half the cap for PT, half for speech. The result is seniors are not getting what they need.
I hope your dad gets better soon. Not many seniors can pay for a PET scan themselves. Especially with all of the prescription donut holes now. My dad had to pay hundreds for one of his meds. It's not right.

Kelly - so sorry to hear this about your dad and he has my prayers.
This is exactly one of my fears about the changes in healthcare due to Obamacare. I get an endoscopy every two years as ongoing follow up to a condition that leaves me with a higher than normal risk for eusophogeal cancer and I'm concerned that new Obamacare rules will soon decide it's not necessary.

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
I'm really sorry about your dad's situation and I see you are really angry about this. However, insurance companies can drop anyone they want whenever they want, Obamacare has nothing to do with that.
This is why I believe we need Obamacare so that people, like your dad, can get coverage and not be slaves to the private insurance industry.
I'll be praying for your dad.

My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
Many prayers that your father will get the monitoring and care that he needs and deserves. I also don't want to spark a debate like many others. I do however want to point out that Obamacare in many ways will be like the Canadian health care system. I am originally from Buffalo which is 10 minutes from Canada so I have many Canadian friends, all of which complain about their health care. Too many times they tell me that it takes forever to get to see a specialist for any kind of concern and they can never get clearance for the tests that they need. My good friend recently had her father pass away from cancer. She said the doctors told her that if he were in the states he would still be alive. It took forever to get him the proper care and by that time, it was too late. Soo sad. I will say I do believe we need some sort of change, everyone should be able to get affordable healthcare but I don't think Obamacare is exact the solution.

It's a free country and we should all be free to speak our minds. If someone doesn't agree with it, that's their problem! A debate is unnecessary when someone simply states their opinion.

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
I'm sorry your Dad is going through this
However, Obamacare has nothing to do with this.
I worked in the billing department of a well known Cancer Hospital in the city and let me tell you if the Devil walks the earth it is in the form of Insurance companies!
They are pure evil and you cannot even beginning to imagine what they will do to save a $1 their way!
I saw people get denied chemo therapy because the insurance company felt that it was an experimental treatment. They should have used a non experimental treatment
I have seen children get denied treatment because the insurance company felt they were more likely born with a pre-existing condition therefore, they did not need to cover it. - THIS one killed me, it was when I was working the Peds accounts and it was my breaking point.
Having to call parents up and tell them they owed us $50,000 for their son's treatment because both their insurance companies denied the claims.
I had insurance companies tell me that according to the medical records, the patient shouldn't have been treated for cancer. They should have gotten a 3rd opinion before starting treatment - claim denied!
This position put me over the edge and I had to leave because I couldn't deal with speaking to insurance companies every day. Speaking to people who didn't even live in the US and spoke terrible English while reading straight from a manual on what to say. It was unreal!

I'm sorry about your dad.
I'm not sure where the evilness of Obamacare comes in when it was the insurance company who denied the tests. If anything they are the ones that are evil. Because of the healthcare reform, your father is still considered able to get insurance.

It's unfortunate but in order for everyone to be insured, "good" health insurance will become almost non-existent

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I wish your dad the best.
Having to deal with the medical issues are enough without having to deal with insurance company bs.
This I'm sorry to say has everything to do with the insurance companies.
Mom had to have a brain tumor removed and since their insurance was only in network, the only doctor that had expertise to do it never did it before. Yeah, that was an interesting consult. But the insurance carrier denied them the chance to go out of network to find a doctor with the necessary experience.
Our doctor called the insurance company and fought it. Mom had a wonderful surgeon. Her outcome was way better than it would have been with that in network surgeon.
This was 18 years ago. It happens every single day.
Again, I wish you and your dad the best. Please keep fighting. It's worth it and makes a difference.

However, as a Canadian I have to respond to this. Yes, there are many Canadians who complain about healthcare - just like many, MANY Americans complain about healthcare. But I grew up in Canada, have several complicated medical conditions, have a mother with even MORE medical conditions, and a sister who has had 2 major surgeries in her 23 years. ALL of us have had wonderful, speedy care in Canada when we needed it. It is not a perfect system, but no system is, and NOBODY in Canada can be dropped by insurance EVER under ANY circumstances. To me, that outweighs the negatives.
