pls read this - does this sound okay?
as you may have read from another post, i asked my boss for off this friday and she said no - said it was a company policy, that nobody is allowed off this week per the company prez. meanwhile, everyone in my office is taking time off this week, including her. now she's nuts so i need to be careful w/my words - she thinks EVERYTHING is "terse." So I want to say something that lets her know that I see what's going on but don't want to be rude or make it sound like i'm challenging her.
What do you think about me saying this? (the part about the appt is true.) I will say this in person. Any other ideas are welcome.
Hi boss, When you told me about the prez's rule about not taking off this week, I cancelled an appointment I had made back in February. I need to reschedule it. When would be a good day for me to take off so I can handle this?

I really WANT to add something about how everyone else has off but knowing my boss, she'll think I'm being accuristory and rude. how do i say something without it coming out that way?

hmmm...
Hi boss,
When would be ok for me to take off for my appt that I had to reschedule, since my understanding is that I need to be here in the office to cover those that are off!
Something along those lines?

You are skirting the issue big time and being passive aggressive about it.
Dear Boss,
Thanks for letting me know about this week being a bad week to take off.
In speaking with some of my colleagues I found out that others do not know this. It seems that others have taken off time this week.
I can't help but feel that I am being singled out. Can we talk about this?
I will need to reschedule an appointment I made several months ago and I want to make sure the date is ok with you and the firm. Please let me know which are the bad weeks/dates so I don't run into this problem again.

"When you told me about the President's rule about not taking off this week, I immediately cancelled a very important appointment that I had scheduled since February. I realize that it was, probably, very important for me to be in the office this week considering the number of people who are slated to be absent. It is imperative that I reschedule this appointment. I would appreciate it if you would let me know as soon as possible as to what would be a good time for me to do so. Thank you."

I'm so blunt, I would probably just say, "I have no problem following the president's rule, but I am confused why so many others in the office are taking off...

Maybe something like this....it seem like the policies regarding vacation hasn't been communicated throughout the office. Can you please clarify what the policy is so I know how to move forward regarding using friday as a vacation day.
