Police: Teen lied about kidnapping
A purported daring escape from a kidnapper with a black BMW was exposed as a ruse after the 14-year-old Roslyn Heights girl recanted her story to police, authorities said Tuesday.
In reality, the unidentified girl, who faces juvenile charges of filing a false police report, was with friends hanging out at a Great Neck park, police said.
She created the kidnapping story to avoid punishment for coming home late, police said.
"Out of fear of parental discipline, she concocted this story," said Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, Nassau police spokesman. "It's a 14-year-old kid who made a bad decision, and it wasted a lot of police resources that could have been used elsewhere."
Police uncovered the hoax during additional interviews with the girl Tuesday at her home. Before speaking with her, they had interviewed her friends and found inconsistencies in her report, Smith said.
Investigators then confronted the girl and she recanted, he said.
When working an abduction case, Smith said, investigators look for differing accounts as a way to determine whether the report is credible, he added.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, more than 260,000 children nationwide are abducted annually.
Center officials didn't have statistics on how many reported cases end up being false.
Nassau police had a news conference in Mineola Tuesday before determining the Roslyn Heights kidnapping was a fake. Det. Lt. Al Anderson, commander of the Sixth Squad, said police were investigating the credibility of the girl's claim, then minutes later, police announced it was a hoax.
The girl, a Roslyn High School student, initially told police she was taken by a man about 5:30 p.m. from the intersection of Church Street and Roslyn Road. She said she managed to escape at 7:30 p.m. when her captor stopped at Bar Beach in Port Washington, about three miles away.
Her claim triggered a countywide manhunt Monday night after the girl told her father she was abducted. Police even released a detailed description and artist rendering of the girl's conjured-up kidnapper based on her interview.

Re: Police: Teen lied about kidnapping
no way!! what is wrong with these kids? Now her punishment will be much more severe than the trouble she would have gotten in for coming home late. Idiot.

Re: Police: Teen lied about kidnapping
as soon as i heard it on channel 7, it sounded fishy, but i didn't pay it too much mind since i was getting ready for work.
i sure hope she gets punished in a way that she'll learn her lesson.
i just don't get what's with people who think this would have been better than the original punishment
