POLL: 2nd car seat

DS has grown out of his snugride. He is a big boy so we wanted to go with a Britax marathon because they go up to 65 lbs.

We got the Onyx for my shower. Now we need a car seat for Dh's car. We only use his car sometimes. We mostly use my car.

I found this site:
traveling tykes

They have older models for $219 no tax or shipping!

We are considering the racer, which I believe is from 2006

For a second car, which is rarely used, would you buy an older model?

Depends. Most car sears expire after 6 years so losing 2 years may not make a difference. A big child probably will not get more than 4 years out of it anyway. It may not be worth it if you have another kid you want to pass it down to. I think that's the site I ordered my seats from-they will give you the most recent dates they have. Call them or send an email-they may be able to do better than 2006.

I agree. It all depends on the age of the seat, and how long you need it. It doesn't matter that it's not used that often. All it takes is one time to have an accident. You don't want that one time to be in an expired seat....

I bought both my kids Marathon's from the site you posted. Both seats I got were on sale, and the seats were manufacturered just months before I got them, so they were not "old".
Yes, the pattern may be retired, but the car seat itself was not years old. I said go ahead.

How can you tell from the site what date they were manufacturered on?? Just curious?

You are sooooo right! I looked up the pattern, not the seat! The Racer pattern is from 2006, not the car seat - I am such an idiot!!!!

I bought a Marathon for Ava at a little over 2. She is bigger, and barely fit in it with a winter coat. I returned it. I got 2 Britax Husky/Regents. They hold a child up to 80 lbs and 8 years old. They are about $300, but totally worth it.

Nope, your not an idiot, just doing your homework! Go for it. It's the cheapest place I've found to get Marathon's, and there is no shipping or tax. I got it in just a few days. My son has the Houndstooth pattern and my daughter has the Couture Dragonfly pattern (it's not on the site anymore). Both were about $219 or so. Both were manufacturered about 2 or 3 months before I got them (i.e., my DD's was manuf. in June 2006 and I got hers in Sept 2006).
