Re: POLL How did you land your job?
TA led to a leave replacement. then permanent sub led to a leave replacement. the 3rd year i had a full time job
i'm honestly glad i didn't get a job right out of college as i know i wasn't ready. i really don't think anyone is. besides the actual curriculum, there is so much politics and decorum of a school that you can only learn with time

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
I picked student teaching, but really, none of the above. I went to a job fair and a few months later a middle school called me for a 6th grade position.
She didn't offer me the job because she found someone who was a better fit - but really liked me so she passed my name along to an elementary principal - who interviewed and hired me :)
My second job I got early hire at a job fair held by the county. Starting in mid June I got about 20 e-mails and calls for interviews at specific schools. I got offers from two on the stop.
It's a lot different here in VA though. There's a lot of growth and mobility - so it's much easier to get a job.

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
I just got my new job through sending out my resume through OLAS and being called, so there is definintely hope that that actually happens! My previous postion was in a private special education school where they gave me a chance based on an interview and I stayed for 3 years...I think the experience there was a huge help on my resume!

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
None of the above. I used to teach in EI and CPSE full time and got my teaching license through that (started with my temporary license) so I never student taught anywhere. I then got a job in the city for a year and the next year I applied to LI and got a job :)

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
I did a leave replacement for a year, and then a friend of a friend told me about my current position being open. After the one year position, I had three offers to choose from!

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
I graduated in December with my certification. I did a leave replacement from Feb-June in one district, and then the teacher was coming back from maternity leave so there were no vacancies for the following September. I went on an interview that summer, and got a FT probationary position for September at another district. Just got Tenure in June. It is funny how things work out in the end!!!

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
Neither of the above...
Right after undergrad., I did a year in a long-term service program (like Peace Corps). When I returned, it was almost October and no jobs... so i found a job as a TA (late opening). I had a good year, but I knew i wanted to go back to school and/or find another district or job than get caught in the TA trap. I continued to job search and apply to grad. schools in the likely event that my district would not hire me (there were a gazillion TAs)
Before I left, the prinicipal said she wanted to hire me... AWESOME! BUT, i had just landed a great job at a university that would pay for my masters degree while giving me work experience in another area i was interested in. She said, "take it! you can always come back to teaching." i thought i was nuts giving up a job on LI in one of the best districts, but I took a risk.. took the job at Fordham and ended up working in higher education for 3 years. After that, I did a year of teaching with the board of Ed. and then... 4 YEARS later, that same prinicipal had a vacancy, remembered me and i was hired.
I truly believe i was meant to be at that school... everything happens for a reason! They were more interested in my work with the poor, my travels, my other work experience than my teaching degree...everyone has that. they were really look for something different and unique from all the other applicants with a Masters.

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
None - I gave me resume to someone I went to grad school with, who had a MIL that was a middle school principal. I got called for an interview, and got a part-time job at that school. I was there for a year, but looking for full-time work, so I sent my resume out and got called for an interview at another school, and was hired for that job. I've been there ever since. I did sub for the time from when my student teaching ended to the end of the school year - a month or so. But I didn't wind up working in the school I student taught or subbed in. Thank goodness!

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
None of the above. I graduated with my masters in May 2004, went on lots of interviews and 2 demo lessons. I got hired by the district I have been working in for three years now. (I teach ESL though so it is a bit easier to find a job.)

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
I had a leave replacement for one year. Then I got a tenure track position the following year but had to move to another school in the district. After 2 years of teaching at the other school, I was granted tenure (they counted my leave replacement year).

Re: POLL How did you land your job?
Someone on LIW posted that they had just been hired at a school in NYC. I FMed her...didn't even know the girl. She was nice enough to talk to the principal, the principal had openings, faxed my resume, went in for an interview and got the job...all in a matter of 24 hours...It was 2 days before school started!
