and for those of you that said you dont think anything was wrong. (and got defensive since you dont have children).
offer to a mom to babysit her 9yr old and then ask "oh bythe way, im going to leave them in the car while it's running and I do a quick shopping"... see how that goes over.
are you joking??? ummmm we never said WE would do that, we just said we wouldnt call the police!!!
no, many have totally defended and justified the situation, even if the kids were definitely alone.

Re: POLL: Would you have called 911 ?
Anna again I agree that this is probably more disturbing to parents. That doesn't mean that any responsible adult isn't or wouldn't be disturbed by it.
I don't think my view is entitled to more weight---I just think its coming from a different place.
Before I was married I thought I knew what marriage was about, twelve years later I can tell you how little I really did know and how my view of marriage in general has changed and evolved over the years.
That said people are entitle to their own opinions. I believe that most people on this board (parents or not) are reasonable, responsible people who would not have left those children in the situation Anna described.

I too was left alone in our family car when I was younger, but to use that now is kinda silly. We live in a completely different world now, in some instances kids can't walk around the block without being killed/kidnapped.
All it takes is one story where some guy broke the window and poof the kids are gone. I mean people get carjacked all the time. I'm not sure if I would call the police or not, but I would of for sure gave the parent my opinion.
I totally agree with you!
Thats why I feel anna did what she did, our world is a much different place now!

Re: POLL: Would you have called 911 ?
I wouldn't have called the police but would have waited until he came out. Many moms leave a car running & a kid in it while dropping off another child at daycare. The daycare has sent out repeated notices not to do that- the latest one was on Tuesday a mom's purse was stolen out of her car. Last month we were inundated with flyers from the school district about the guy stealing cars at 3 different locations in East Northport. It's not like I live in crime central.
I understand what you mean about being a parent vs. non-parent. I know that since having kids, I will spot a kid running in a mall & immediately look around for a mom/dad. If I don't see one, I will watch until I do see one. It's not to say when I wasn't a parent, I didn't care about kids. I think for me becoming a parent makes you notice them more. My kids have been instructed if they are ever lost to find a "Mommy" with kids. Not to look for a police officer because they can't distinguish any joe schmoo security guard, janitor or anyone else roaming the mall from a cop. It's not that I trust parents more, it's that someone with kids are unlikely to walk off with one of mine.
I think a 9 year old is mature enough to be left for a few minutes alone depending on the circumstances. I don't think a running car is one of them. It was foolish of the guy - and while he will probably do it again if there was an iota of a chance that you got through to him,

Re: POLL: Would you have called 911 ?
This thread is STILL going???
here's my few thoughts...
--I would have been appalled and probably said something...
--I probably would not have called the cops
--I am one of six (four being older) and we were left alone in the car all the time when we were younger--with my Dad and my mother (heck I was sitting in the front seat at six and sandwiched between my mother and sister) My sister Kori actually burnt the brakes one time and even tried to pull the car in reverse (we couldn't have been more tha 5,7, 9, and 11)
--I would never leave my children though. But what age is appropriate. Some 11 year olds are a heck of a lot trustworthy than some 16 year olds (and may even do more damage)
--but the sore spot is the OP insinuation that having kids makes you care more or less strongly. I actually undertsand someone;s desire to just "run quick" in a store now with a child. This is not the first post and will not be the last that I feel that lines are being drawn for no reason, parents verse non-parents...and it's annoying...

wah wah she called me retarded. Im SOO glad I have 3 boys
So anyway, what would have been the point of calling the police if he was on his way out of the store? He would have been gone by the time they got there. I was checking out the situation to make sure I wasnt seeing wrong or misinterpreted.
Im not responding to any more "retarded" people. Heaven FORBID someone called you that on here
