Poly-Vi-Flor vitamin? Any reason to NOT give to DC?
My ped gave me a prescription for this a while ago but I never filled it b/c my DC didn't have teeth. Now he does and I'm wondering are there any cons to this? Is there any reason to NOT give FLORIDE to DS? TIA!!!!

Re: Poly-Vi-Flor vitamin? Any reason to NOT give to DC?
I have been giving DD this vitamin for over a year now and have not had any problems. One of the main reasons for me to give it to DD is b/c she is such a picky eater. For me, it's a guarantee that she gets her daily vitamins, if not through food, through a dropper.
ETA: The vitamin is so vile looking and smelling BUT DD loves it!

I also have given this to my DS for over a year and he's done fine with it. My doctor said that LI water has no fluoride in it so the kids need it.

I give it to DS because of fluoride and because we are reducing milk vs. more food.

Re: Poly-Vi-Flor vitamin? Any reason to NOT give to DC?
Yes, there are some people who believe there are reasons not to give it. I think they believe that extra flouride has a potential for harm. I believe in flouride because I got flouride vitamins as a kid and had pretty good teeth until a dentist screwed me up. I changed dentists temporarily when I was younger and suddenly the new guy found a ton of cavities to fill. I think they were never there. They are still the only fillings I ever really needed but I have had to have them all redone. The only other dental problem I ever had was due to an accident.

This is a good vitamin depending upon where you live. My ped didn't realize I lived in a fluoridated area and gave me an Rx for it. Thank goodness I am a dentist and realized his mistake! I informed him of where I was living and he was glad I did not give it to DS-It can cause tooth discoloration... if you over fluoridate a child. However I am a strong believer in Fluoride and if I lived in an area without it I would definitely recommend it. DS does take a normal multivitamin though just no fluoride.

Stupid Q: wouldn't fluoride be just in tap water?
So until DS drinks water from the tap, I believe I should still give him his vitamin.
For the record, we use bottled water. Does it has fluoride?

Make sure you live in an area where your water does not have added fluoride. I give DS without fluoride b/c we actually have a history of fluorosis in my family! I brush his teeth and give him plenty of water to prevent tooth damage, and he is set to have his first dental visit next month!
I get the OTC vitamins with iron, but no fluoride.

Re: Poly-Vi-Flor vitamin? Any reason to NOT give to DC?
My neighbor told me her ped. said this particular vitamin was discontinued. Not that it could hurt children, but it just wasnt doing anything. I have to ask my ped. about this next time I go. To be honest, I very rarely give DS his vitamins.

Another FYI: Be very careful with nursery water and fluoride vitamins together. You can definitely over fluoridate your child. Your child does not need to have teeth to give them the vitamin--the teeth are under the gums getting the benefits of the fluoride. I do not give my DD vitamins daily because of fluorosis, I skip days.

Re: Poly-Vi-Flor vitamin? Any reason to NOT give to DC?
We use it but we drink bottled water (NOT nursery water) but I believe most of Nassau water is fluoride free - there is fluoride in queens and NYC I believe. But if you drink Poland Spring etc then you would probably want to give them. I think it is important - I took fluoride vitamins growing up and I never had a cavity. I hope DD is just as lucky. If your local water has fluoride then you don't need it b.c you don't want to use too much fluoride.
Someone above said they weren't making the vitamin anymore - if so I know nothing about that as we give it to DD and haven't had trouble getting it.

Taylor loves the vitamins. I think they smell and taste gross, but she takes it straight out of the dropper!

Just curious how do you find out if there is flouride in your tap water. Is there a website you can look that info up?
