Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
Hi ladies, Sorry for crashing---I lurk here now and again, but I wanted to post after speaking with my new gyno. I had a previous one who basically was not making me feel he was treating me like his patient, vs. just a number on a chart. Especially when I told him how I was experiencing VERY painful ovarian cyst ruptures for the past year. After speaking with my new gyno yesterday, he is fairly certain (pending some blood tests and such) that I have PCOS, based on my history and symptons.
I've been reading up on this and its been getting me a little worried. We are not going to start TTC until the end of the year, but seeing how this can be an issue with fertility has me a little worried. Since I had my first period--I have ALWAYS had nothing but problems in that area....irregular cycles, bleeding for 50-60 days straight....to not having a cycle for 2 months...cysts growing and bursting extremely painfully...etc. So hearing about this--has made me just say "great, not ANOTHER problem there!" Since endometriosis runs in my family, I've always been worried about THAT, and now I can worry about this too.
Well a fellow LIWer told me I should post here, since some of you may have this issue as well. Right now my gyno is putting me back on BCP -- as I was off it for awhile -- and if this does not regular me and stop the painful ruptures--we will look into further treatment.
How has your experiences been with this? Treatments?

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
You sound like you're in exactly the same boat as me!
I was just diagnosed with PCOS in December and recently with insulin resistance. I started metformin for my insulin resistance a month ago but it hasn't yet regulated my period.
My DH and I weren't really ready to TTC but being that PCOS is going to be a hurdle, we are going to start now....
My advice to you is to have the appropriate blood work done, a sono to see if you have cysts presently on your ovaries and a glucose test to see if you are IR. If you are IR, you should be put on metformin to help regulate you.
We are starting our first round of clomid (fertility drug) this month along with the metformin to see if we conceive. If not, we'll move on to an IUI.
Feel free to FM anytime you have questions.

I have watched my sister struggle with Endo for years. So I am sending you tons of HUGS. I am glad your new doctor is treating YOU, not just your body. You deserve the answers you need!

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
I have PCOS as well and there are things you can start doing NOW if you are absolutly positive that you dont want to start TTC now. First like poster above said, you need to check your Insulin resistance levels. Metformin may be something your doctor can prescribe to get your cycles headed in the right direction. It takes several months for the metforming to "kick in" so that might be something to start now. Also, had i known about how hard it was going to be TTC we would have started trying a lot earlier. My GYN always told me that when it was time for me to try to have a baby it could take longer than expected but she never really explained why. The why is because apparently I dont ovulate regularly....and if I'm not ovulating then there is no chance of pregnancy and where those with normal cycles have 12 chances to get pregnant in a year, I'm lucky if I have 3 or 4 chances. It is not out of the realm for it to take 2-3 years (or longer ) to get pregnant once you start TTC....so in my opinion its never too early to start doing something about it.

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
thanks ladies--i will definitely ask my doc if i should be on the Metoformin soon. all of this is just so overwhelming!
i actually started crying yesterday to my DH--asking him if he would leave me if i couldn't have his kids. he told me i was crazy--but its just a fear that i think naturally comes out when he's talked about wanting to be a father for years!

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
I was diagnosed in Nov. with PCOS. I found out last May that I had endometriosis and had the surgery. My doctor then did more tests and found I had PCOS and was not ovulating. I did not plan on TTC as soon either. UNfortunately, my doctor told me after my surgery in May that trying to have a child was going to be difficult and if I didn't start soon it would not be good. At that point everything in my life changed. My wedding was moved up and we have been trying since. Needless to say I am still not preg. I began the Metformin also in Dec. and my first round of Clomid last month. Waiting to get results from my bloodwork on whether or not I am preg. My doctor is a specialist in this area so I am positive. IMO- I would not put too much pressure on yourself and just be careless. If it happens then it's great if not, you can become more serious in a few months. Def. begin the metformin. Good Luck!!
** Also, have you read about PCOS and all of the symptoms? The worse for me that made me realize something was wrong was the 25lb. weight gain out of no where!!

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
Hey Melissa,
I was diagnosed about 6 months ago. The good news is, if you start trying to get a handle on it now, it's completely manageable. I'm glad I decided to get a jump-start, because I would have had no clue when we started TTC.
Definitely go see an RE ASAP, my RE has helped me out a lot.
Good luck!

HEH, yeah--I gained 50 lbs. in EIGHT MONTHS after having lost 60 lbs. the year before--and my doctor never batted an eyelash.

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome -- questions
I think the weight gain is what hurts more than the PCOS!!
