Pool deck - wood v. Trex
Last year we put in a semi inground pool and are going to put a deck around it this year. We were planning on doing the Trex-type of material, but it is . DH just priced out the trex v. wood and the difference is huge (less than half the price for wood as compared to trex). I know trex is no-maintenance and the wood requires a lot of upkeep, but not sure if we can justify the price difference. (about $10K+ for the trex and less than half of that for wood - after doing a rough estimate). Anyone have any thoughts on whether the trex-type deck is really worth the extra money? (We will most likley be in this house for about another 15 years)

We have trex. we have had it almost 2 years now and we have had no issue with it. it just could use a good washing from the elements but that is about it.
We just had cement slab before.

Re: Pool deck - wood v. Trex
We are contemplating the same with our deck. I swear the opinions I get are 50/50.
The only bad thing I have heard about trex (I don't know if it's true) is it gets hot in the sun. So being barefoot on it can be a bit much. With wood, it's not as bad.
we are still undecided

Yes, the trex does get hot, that I know for sure. I know I would love the trex anyway, but the price is crazy, compared to wood. We were actually planning in spending the money for the trex and had budgeted for it, but when DH told me how much cheaper it would be for the wood, and I started to think about all the other things we could do with the money we would save . . . KWIM?

Yea I know exactly what you mean. Hey, a wood deck can last a very long time. You just have to maintain it. My ILs had a wood deck at their last house for almost 20 years, it looked great.

Re: Pool deck - wood v. Trex
One thing to be aware of with the trex, is that if it gets stained (sunblock, soda, coffee, wine, etc...) you can't get the stain out. With wood you can always sand it down and refinish it. I remember looking at trex when we were building our deck. There was a banister and ledge. Someone must have left a coffee cup on the ledge and there was a permanent stain.

And the Trex will fade if you have good sun. So consider getting a darker color than you expect. If I knew it was going to fade as much as it has, I would have went darker.

We currently have the wood but was considering switching over to the TREX, but not sure if we should.

On the flip side, the darker you go, the hotter it will get.
