How long should I leave the filter on a day?

This is what my pool company said. I have a 20x40 inground..he said 8 hrs.

Thank you. I have the solar cover on and it is a 10' pool. I turned it on before I left for work at 10 and will shut it off when I get home around 4.
I am going to Island Recreational tonight so I will if that is long enough.
