Porch photosessions

I'm trying to understand something I'm seeing on FB. I see photographers getting blasted for offering 'porch photo sessions'. Apparently that is where the photographer comes to your house and stays 6ft away while taking pics of your family on the front porch. People of course start commenting nasty things like ... the photographers should stay home, there is no need for pics etc.

There is another photographer offering porch photo sessions, in exchange for a donation to Stony Brook Hospital to help stop coronavirus. All these moms around here are blasting the other photographers for trying to make a living (saying it still isn't safe), but booked the photographer that's offering the free session for a donation. Like what's the difference? I think it's hypocritical. If businesses can conduct business from a safe distance, shouldn't they be allowed to? or it's only OK to leave the house if you're donating your skills?

Re: Porch photosessions

Hypocrisy at it's finest.
I am so fuking sick and tired of the sanctimonious assholes this thing has brought out everywhere.
I've always hated people but this has upped it exponentially.

Not everyone can stay home for 18 months and survive on no income. But it must be nice to be that privileged and look down upon the others who aren't and act like you alone are saving the world. I hope that makes them feel better about themselves

totally hypocritical. I think it's great idea and still promotes social distancing. Good for them for trying to sustain their business.

I get that people need to make money but no one neeeeds pictures so it really does not comply with shelter in place.

I have never taken professional pics outside of my wedding so I just don’t see it as a need. And right now like is about needs not wants.

What about people needing to make a living though? A lot of photographers are self-employed or freelance don't qualify for unemployment.

ETA: this post wasn't really supposed to be about people wanting photos. I was posting about the hypocrisy. Like a business owner that donates his time, so he can leave the house and he's praised for it, but a business owner that needs to make a living should be ashamed for trying to find a way to continue doing business safely.

Re: Porch photosessions

I don’t see a problem with it. Technically it’s not an essential business and they shouldn’t be doing it. May even get fined if people report it. But being far away and snapping pics to make people feel some sort of normal is a good thing to me.

But yea ... I’d be careful though.

Where is there a shelter in place? How is this any different than standing 6 feet or more away from someone in a store?

Nobody is supposed to be conducting any business unless it’s considered essential. I doubt photographers are essential.

Shelter in place makes me laugh, sorry. Even Cuomo said that's so over the top. That's for an active shooter situation. Or a nuclear bomb.

I don't care if people want to take pics on their porch with the photographer 6 feet apart, whether for profit or for charity.

I don't really know why anyone cares. There is no issue with standing 6 feet away from someone outdoors. None.

I have no problem with it. Who cares if it’s non essential. It’s no different than me stopping to say hi to my dad and staying on the walkway while he’s at the door. That’s not illegal yet...

Exactly. Cuomo said they should not be using that term because it’s not appropriate terminology for this circumstance. He called it Matildas law. Stay at home unless you need necessities or if a relative needs emergency care. It’s to protect the vulnerable population

Porch photosessions

Only on LI would people hire someone to take pics of their family sitting on the front steps during a pandemic. Lol.

Again, if it doesn't affect you and it's following rules of social distancing ignore it.

Chat Icon I don't disagree.

But if it puts a few meals on the table for someone's family I can't argue with it.

I guess I just don't see the need during a pandemic to have photoshoots done, but at the same time, if it's keeping someone in business, who am I to judge.

It just seems silly all around I guess. Why have a photographer leave their home and go out to take photos on your porch? Is it that much of a need?

This is actually part of something called #TheFrontStepsProject. Someone started this in Boston as a "pay it forward" kinda thing. The photographer takes a photo of a family on their front steps and pays by donating to a charity.

I think it's kinda nice. I guess some photographers are just doing it for themselves. And, I guess I don't blame them. They're not having any contact with people. They're just standing away from them, taking a photo, and emailing it. I personally don't have a problem with it.

While I get that it still technically allows for social distancing, it just opens up for more people to think “well if they still can do this, then I can still do XYZ.”
There are a lot of jobs people still “could” be doing. But they only want ESSENTIAL jobs right now and everyone else to STAY HOME.

So just stay home.

IMO it's not. And not everyone has the luxury of staying home with no income so if they can do something safely I have no problem with it.

But we have also reached the point where people are aggressively shaming others for needing or wanting to take a drive past the beach on the weekend.

When you really look around, many people are turning out to be complete hypocrites.

Yep. I am so tired of the shaming. I can see if you are having huge gatherings and putting people at risk. But taking a drive or walking in a huge park with plenty of space, give it a fuking rest.
And I'm tired of the people posting all over Facebook, STAY HOME! In big letters. Like they are yelling at everyone.
I'm a grown ass adult- you aren't my keeper.
If someone is going to break the rules, do you really think they will stop because you posted on Facebook- STAY HOME!!!!! ?
Please. Give it a fuking rest already.

Exactly. It's not a need for the family, but it's a need for the photographer.
Take out is not a need either, but I get it because I want to support the local businesses.
I ordered my daughter an art kit from a local art place that we frequent for art classes and camps- she didn't NEED it, but this poor woman is trying to survive with her business closed.

My friend is doing one for us - she enjoys taking pictures and she is an essential worker otherwise so I think she just wants to do something to keep busy. And to see friends, even if from afar.
