Positive phone calls
I had such a great experience this morning. Yesterday, two of my 10th grade boys came to my office after school to work on a rough draft that was due today. They sat with me for 40 minutes working on it, and they both worked really hard. This would be good for any kid, obviously, but these two have quite the reputations as troublemakers, so I was VERY proud of them. I couldn't believe they actually took me up on my offer and came for the help. Well, today, I decided to call their parents and let them know. I have never heard parents sound so shocked and so happy about a phone call home. They said such nice things, too. It was a wonderful experience. And when I told one of the kids later that I'd called home to tell his mom how proud I was of him, he beamed (and told me he loves me  ) I think I need to make some more calls like these in the future.

I have a rule for myself for every 3 bad phone calls I make at least one positive. It's just such a nice thing to do.
Glad that you had a positive experience too.

I try to do this as often as possible..it helps to create such a better rapport with the students and parents. When other students find out I made a "good" call, usually they put themselves in check so they get one too.

You're totally right. I've always known it was a good idea to make these kinds of calls (and I used to back in my first year, come to think of it). I guess as the years have gone by, I've forgotten. I'm glad I remembered on Friday.  I don't think I'll forget again.

YAY! isn't that the best feeling! and in our district, some parents can be downright crazy, so it's nice when you can get to them first with something positive!

I think it's great to make positive calls, good for you I try to send one positive e-mail/call a week.

That's so nice!!! It's great for parents and students to see that not all teacher contact has to be negative.
I was better about those calls in my first year, too

And as a not-so-lovey coda... one of those children got suspended today. At least his mom had some good news within the last week.
