i absolutely love the name ethan if we weren't going for an irish name. my top 3 names for irish names are declan, shane, liam.

We are doing Irish-Gaelic names, so probably not what you're looking for at all!
My favorites are:
Eamon (this will probably be it because I love it and it's after my grandpa)

Padraig

In terms of average, American sounding names, I don't like "trendy names" or last names as first names. If we weren't picking an Irish name, we would both do a saint's name something like Thomas, Matthew, Michael....etc. I like a nice classic, solid name for a boy. Save the beauty for a girl baby!
