Potty-training question for those who have BTDT!

Ok, so...here goes...

My DD is 17 months. She doesn't say very much--but we know that she understands us and can actually communicate with us quite well on most things...

Today, when she had to do poo, my DH said that she cleared off her little toy box, sat on it, and did her business. Then she got up and went about her business.

I'm anxious to see if she chooses the same spot tomorrow, but I'm curious...does this seem like an action that could possibly show us that she's interested in the potty? Normally she'll just stop right in the middle of whatever she's doing and go, but it seemed so strange that she cleared off a "spot".

And if this IS showing an interest in getting started...how can I have her communicate to me when she needs to go? Chat Icon I'm so clueless about all of this.

Should I be sitting her on the potty, just to introduce it?

Thanks for any advice you can give me...I guess I haven't thought about this very much yet, but it might be time!

I don't have a kid that is potty trainedChat Icon but I do think that she could be "getting ready" but I do think she will need to communicate more to really be able to express when she has to go.

Does she see you or DH go? Imitation at that age is a huge thing, so she could just be imitating what she sees (which is also a step to PTing!)Chat Icon

You know, it's funny...I take her into the bathroom with me every day while I shower (I babyproofed and have a bunch of toys in there for her), and I used to close off the toilet room whenever I would use the toilet (our toilet has its own little room next to the shower). I mostly closed it off because she'd unravel the toilet paper Chat Icon but lately I've been leaving the door open and she plays peek-a-boo with me around the door frame Chat Icon Now that you mention it, I wonder if that could be where the "imitation" is coming from...

I guess maybe tomorrow, I'll try to get her around her normal "poo time", and I'll take her diaper off and put her on the potty and see what happens? Can't hurt, I guess!

1st I would like to say that if she is ready- she's ready. She isn't too young if she is in fact ready. I would introduce her to the potty. Worse case is that she isn't ready and so you stop and reintroduce it to her down the road.
My DD showed interest at 17 months as well. She did good but it was very much of a game to her rather than a fact of life. She was a little too immature and even though she got the concept- it was turning into a project for me. I stopped it and reintroduced it to her when I felt she was 100% ready. That was 2 weeks before her 2nd birthday. She trained in a week.

My other DD followed her sister and wanted to potty train at 18 months. Before she was 20 months she was 100% trained. She just "got it" from watching her sister.

There is no harm in showing her but if it's stressing you out and becoming more of a hassle than it worth, I'd stop and try again later on.

MY DS did start to go out of our sight when he started to become aware of what he was doing...

I posted a few weeks back that my DD, has been saying "poop" while she was going and/or coming over to me and telling me she had "poop" for me to change her ...

So I "think" that it probably is a very early sign of awareness...I am not going to be sitting her on the potty for a little while, but I probably will start leaving it in the bathroom so she gets used to seeing it ...

Thank you all so much for your help and advice! I truly appreciate it!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think I will pick up a potty seat and try it out tomorrow...and as Carolyn said, if it's too much of a game at this point, I'll stop and try again later.

I'd like to try a rewards system for this if I can...I remember on Jon & Kate Plus 8, she used to give each child an M&M for sitting on the potty in the beginning, and eventually for going on the potty. I love that idea, and I know my DD would love it too...but as someone who has been obese for about 2/3 of my life, I'm a little reluctant to use food as a reward...I just don't want my DD to grow up with the same distorted view of food that I have...(ok, now this is turning into a different thread altogether Chat Icon).

Maybe stickers? I wonder if she'd like that...

I feel the same way!!! The sitter hs been trying with DS....he did go pee pee on the potty there....she gave him a bit of a Kit Kat as a reward....but I too am leary of thatChat Icon

To answer the original question....as for awareness....DS had like a 3 week time period back a few months ago that he would tell us right before or right after. He stopped though 7 hasn;t done it since....so I am not pushing it.

Re: Potty-training question for those who have BTDT!

I get a feeling that Abby will train well. Every time she poops, she says "POOP" and pats her bottom. It is a step in the right direction. HOWEVER, we are going to be moving within the next 2 months and she is going to have a little brother - LOTS of big changes. I would like to wait until we move before we officially start with potty training.
