PPD/Anxiety Poll

I had PPD/Anxiety with my 1st baby and now I'm 36 weeks with Baby #2. I'm wondering if I will feel the same way....

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

My dr said that every pregnancy and post partum experience is different. Somewhere around 30% of post-birth experiences result in some type of depression or anxiety situation she said. But she stressed that its 30% of births, not 30% of women. Just because you have had it in the past doesn't necessarily mean you will again. Important to look for signs and be aware though... Best of luck and hang in there!

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

No, just because you have it with the first doesn't mean you will have it with the 2nd. I was extremely anxious with my first......was terrified of being alone with her, going places by myself with her. Just constantly anxious about everything. Was completely different with my 2nd. I think a part of it is you know what to expect and you are more at ease. Good luck!

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

I did. I had terrible ppd with my first that went undiagnosed for a year. Was on meds. During 2nd pregnancy and my dose was upped after my second was born because it reared its ugly head again. That said, i was much better with #2 bc i was on meds. For me, meds. Were the answer.

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

I had horrible PPD with my first. But looking back, I was anxious during most of that pregnancy, had lots of stress due to working for a horrible boss, and had a traumatic delivery. All risk factors.

Second time, two years later, no PPD with my second son. I felt okay during the pregnancy, had left that awful job, and my delivery went smoothly. So maybe that is why.

Good luck, hope you avoid it. If not, luckily, there are great treatment options.

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

I have horrible anxiety in general that I am on medication for. With my first- I tried to come off the meds. It was a disaster. I was going off the deep end quickly. I started taking it again and was feeling a bit better but when I got home from the hospital I was a wreck!! I was back to myself again after a few weeks-a month.

With my second I stayed on my medication and had no problems throughout pregnancy (besides the normal hormonal issues). When DD2 was born, she had to be in the NICU for a week (nothing to do with my being on meds Chat Icon) and although I was upset- I didn't obsess or majorly freak out. When I brought her home- I had a little bit of anxiety that I wouldn't be able to deal. I was getting anxiety over the possibility of having PPD. I was fine.

This time, again I'm on my meds and I'm hoping things will go smoothly- even better than with #2!

One of the other big differences between 1 & 2 is that #1 was a C-Section and #2 was a VBAC. I don't know if that has anything to do with my level of anxiety- but it is interesting.

My best advice is to try not to worry yourself into an anxiety attack by thinking you are going to have PPD!! Try to think positively!!

Best of luck to you! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

You are a greater risk of PPD. You should start seeing someone. I went to a therapist while I was still pregnant because hormones really effect me and after I gave birth I was started on medication. I have to add I have a history of depression and anxiety and was on medication prior. PPD doesn't mean you will need medication but going to therapy will help.

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

I feel much better now, it seems like many people were much better for their 2nd. I had a C Section last time due to fetal distress and failure to progress. This time I'm going for a VBAC. I never went on meds last pregnancy because I didn't realize that I had PPD and that how I was feeling was really abnormal. This time around I will definitely get some help.

I has it worse with my second but I think that's because I was so overwhelmed with having 2. I went on meds when #2 was 6 months and felt so much better!!i was on celexa and experienced no side effects other than a 5lbs weight gain. I wish I would have went on sooner. If I ever have #3, I'd go on right away. Good luck and if you do feel like its starting, don't hesitate to go on meds, therapy, etc.

PPD/Anxiety Poll

I can't speak from experience (haven't given birth yet) but if you are open to it, having your placenta encapsulated (groud into powder and made into pills you can take) can help with PPD.

Re: PPD/Anxiety Poll

I had severe anxiety with my first pregnancy and then after DS was born. I did not, however, have it in my 2nd pregnancy. My DD is 4 months old and just today I had a mini-panic attack out of no where ... chills, racing heart, light headed.
