Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

I usually preheat for a few mins... I see the temp rising, so I wait until it's at least close to my desired temp.

Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

i wait for it to be reheated unless its something i don't really care about. I also try to bring things to relative room temps before putting them in the oven so things are correctly cooked.

Stuff like pizza or chicken nuggets, fries etc. I'll just throw in and start cooking.

But not baking stuff.

It really only matters when you're being precise about whatever you're cooking.

It's like boiling an egg. You're supposed to let the water come to a boil and then put the egg in so that you can time how long it's being cooked. If you put the egg in the cold water and bring it to a boil, you already begun cooking the egg during the time the water was reaching boil temp.

For a frozen pizza, I guess it doesn't matter.

I always pre-heat.

I actually pre-heat it to 225 first.......then wait.........then pre-heat it to desired temperature. I've heard many times doing it this way saves wear and tear on your oven. And once it heats to 225---its seems to be so much faster to heat to the desired temp.

Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

I usually preheat but I don't wait for it to get to the optimal temp unless I'm baking...if its just a frozen pizza it usually goes in after the oven hits 300

Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

For par-baked (brown & serve) breads and rolls you want to pre-heat the oven so it's hot enough to properly carmelize the sugars that brown the crust. If you don't pre-heat, or if it's not hot enough you'll just dry out the bread without browning. So a frozen pizza is probably drying out the crust somewhat, without giving it a nice brown crust.

Oven temps do more than just make something warm, the chosen temperature can also affect the way the ingredients interact with the heat too and can change the end results for better or worse.

Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

I only really preheat when I am baking. otherwise I throw it in...and that is with an oven that beeps to let me know when it's at the temp. I once heard that it's more energy wise to just put it in and to shut off the oven during the last 10 minutes because the cooking heat will be high inside long after

Re: pre-heating the oven - settle a debate

I always pre-heat because I feel I can't accurately time whatever it is if it is not put into a pre-heated oven.

I wait. Pasta should be at a rolling boil so it doesn't stick to itself.

I use a toaster oven for frozen pizza and things like that.
