We did both & I'd say private was better.

Re: Pre K in the school district vs. Pre K privately the one you have to pay for
I would think private was better. But I guess it depends on the school?
You guys are so lucky to have Preschool available to you for FREE. They don't have that here in NC. You have to pay for it. My friends kids in NY go to it for FREE. They live in Centereach. I'm broke paying for all of this Preschool. What's worse is that my kids HAVE to go to it FT because I work. Talk about expensive!

Re: Pre K in the school district vs. Pre K privately the one you have to pay for
well, in our district the pre-k is through headstart and it is WAY better than the private pre-k's available- they have amazing funding and an excellent curriculum where the private pre-k in our area is more like day care.
If i were you, I'd take a tour of the pre-k offered by your district and meet w/ teachers, social workers, etc- that's what I did... and i was all ready to "poo poo" it and go private.

Re: Pre K in the school district vs. Pre K privately the one you have to pay for
I think it's hard to generalize. It depends on the individual district as well as the individual private school you're comparing it to. Not all private preschools are created equal (based on my experience), and I imagine not all districts' pre-k programs are either (though I have no experience with it)

I would imagine it depends on each program.
After haven been in day care since 3 months I am thrilled my 4 yr old can go to a program for free in September. He is more than ready socially/academically to start school.

here in charlotte, they have pre-k through the schools but you have to qualify, not sure what the requirements are to qualify though
