Pre-orders surge for O.J. Simpson book
A week ago, Barnes & Noble, Inc., announced it would not keep copies of the new edition of O.J. Simpson's "If I Did It" in its stores, saying the book was not expected to sell well.
Since then, the book has jumped into the top 50 on the superstore's online site, Barnes & Noble.com, and ranked No. 48 as of Sunday night. Barnes & Noble has not changed its mind.
"We still have no plans to stock it in our stores," spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating told The Associated Press on Sunday. The book, coming out this fall, can be purchased through Barnes & Noble.com, or by special order at a Barnes & Noble store.
Simpson's book was first scheduled for publication last November by ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins, with an announced printing of 400,000. But "If I Did It" was dropped in response to widespread outrage, including from relatives of murder victims Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
The book is a ghostwritten, hypothetical description of how the killings might have happened.
But last month, a federal bankruptcy judge awarded rights to the book to Goldman's family to help satisfy a $38 million wrongful death judgment against Simpson. "If I Did It," spurned by mainstream publishers, is being reissued by Beaufort Books, a small press based in New York. The Goldmans are calling the book a confession, and extensive commentary will be added to the original manuscript.
Eric Kampmann, the owner and president of Beaufort Books, has questioned Barnes & Noble's reason for not stocking the book, telling the AP in a recent interview that he suspects the superstore's executives were "making their decision based on the HarperCollins experience, which was a totally different situation."
A rival chain, Borders Group Inc., will stock the book, but, according to spokeswoman Ann Binkley, "will not promote or market the book in any way."
Interest jumped last week after TV host Oprah Winfrey announced that on Sept. 13 she would bring together Denise Brown, Nicole Brown Simpson's sister; and Goldman's parents, Fred and Kim Goldman. Brown has accused the Goldmans of hypocrisy for publishing a book that he had called "disgusting and despicable" when Simpson first planned to publish it.
Simpson has maintained his innocence in the 1994 killings in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles.

On the one hand, good for the Goldmans that they may finally get some money out of this horror, but ewwww, who is ordering this book? I can't imagine reading it.

I believe it is completely tasteless and tacky to even order or contemplate reading this book, but to each his own!

Re: Pre-orders surge for O.J. Simpson book
What's the difference between B&N selling it in their stores or selling it in their online store??
I think it's a rather shifty move on B&N's part. They look like the "good guy" but nonetheless, they are *still* selling the book and making money off of it.
The silver lining to this sad story is that at least OJ won't see a dime of the proceeds.

And all the money is going to the estates of his victims so if people buy the book aren't they really helping? JMO
I agree it's great that the money is going to the families of the victims but I still think the book, as a concept, is unbelievably in bad taste.

To the contrary, I say shame on the Goldmans for publishing this book and exploiting the murder of their family member and Nicole Simpson and shame on OJ Simpson - the sack of sh!t - for writing it.
And poor OJ's children - having to watch his father capitalize off of the murder of their mother.
Yes, it was fully within their right to publish it, but I personally disagree with the decision. Then again, I'm not in their situation, so it is not my decision.

I see what you are saying, but at some point the book would have been leaked on the internet since it was already finished when the plug was pulled the first time. If this filth is going to be out there, at least they will profit from it, KWIM?

Poor OJ's children my foot! His daughter was found to be helping him "hide" the advance money, in a fake business set up in her name, he received from the publisher when they were trying to get it back from him when the deal fell through.
She's no better than him IMO...

They took that back, it was in the news. When the deal fell through he had to give it back. That was when it came out that he and his daughter tried hiding the money in a fake business account they set up in her name.
Losers.

I understand what you're saying, too. I just happen to disagree.
I see both sides - I just do not think this book should be published. JMHO. (ETA - I don't think it should have been written, but it's too late for that! )

No worries! I'm sorry if I came off strong in that post, it just makes my blood boil to know that his own child would do something like that or that he would get his own child involved in a scam like that.

Re: Pre-orders surge for O.J. Simpson book
the book shouldnt be published in our opinions, BUT if the familiy of those killed wanted it published, who the heck are we to say ANYTHING about it?
We have no personal investment in it...THEY do...
And if they wanted to reap financial rewards from it , so be it.
IMO, once you lose someone to murder, well anything goes....

Nope, you didn't come off too strong at all. I wasn't aware of that story - just knew vaguely he planned to use a trust to put the earnings into so they would go to his kids "technically" (in attempt to avoid paying the Goldmans)... didn't know the details.
The whole thing is gross.

I agree and disagree...
I do agree that ultimately, it is up to the Goldman's and if they feel this is what they want to do, then so be it.
But having been a relative to the victim of a violent murder, I would NEVER want to do anything that would bring my family member's perpetrator any kind of notoriety.
I think that was part of his motivation to write the book. Get back in the public eye and to make lots of money.
It's disgusting.

I totally agree with you there. I'm still stunned that the book got to the point it did. Completely disgusting.

I understand totally what your saying.
Dont get me wrong, I have my own not too good opinions regarding why they are doign it.
But in the end I feel like I am not in their shoes, dont know their true motivation, CANNOT know it since its not be, so I wont judge them ( well aloud anyway )
for your own battle...
