I have eaten soft cheeses, processed deli meats, coffee (in moderation) and yes caffeinated diet soda products.

I think there is a difference between being cautious and driving ones self crazy. And yes, one might think I would be treating my body like the Holy Temple considering what I have been through to get to this stage, but ya know what? I am only human. When I have deli meats, it isn't every day and all the time. I don't exactly open my mouth under the udders of a cow and say "GIVE ME MORE DAIRY," and I don't exactly have the shakes because I have a half a cup of coffee every day or maybe a Diet Coke twice a week.

I think we all know our limits and most of us are smart enough to know how much is too much. It saddens me to think that someone feels they have endangered their child because of ONE serving of a "forbidden" food. It doesn't exactly happen that way.

as usual, a wonderful voice of reason Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks. Truth be told, I am willing to bet that we pose more of a threat to our unborn children when we speed on the LIE going to and from work than we do by having a flake of feta cheese in a salad. JMO.

I am going to post on this thread what I always post on these. There is NO such thing as the preggo police who are going to come and get you if you eat something that is considered taboo.

Moderation is key.

Also, you'd be surprised at what goes out the window when you can't keep food down. My OB told me to eat anything that would stay down. And if that was salami and provolone so be it.

Re: Pregnancy Food Taboos

I am going to be a first time mother, so I have been trying to eat healthier in general, with that said, I have been avoiding foods that are not really that good for you or processed or have caffeine in them because that is what I feel comfortable doing. I feel guilty eating something that I know isn't good for me when I have a baby feeding off those nutrients too.

However, I also believe there is no right or wrong opinion to this topic because everyone is differant. I have seen women that smoked throughout their entire pregnancy and I have seen very pregnant women drinking apple martinis, and never judged them....to each their own I say. What they do is none of my business, we all need to do what we feel comfortable doing.

I have to say that I also feel healthier since I have started eating better, so that is also a major reason I have been limiting what I eat. We'll see in the next couple of months how it goes, or what kind of crazy cravings I might have, ya never know I might end up changing the way I am eating completley Chat Icon

Re: Pregnancy Food Taboos

Anything my doctor told me to avoid entirely I have avoided. That includes soft cheeses, raw fish, alcohol, cold cuts (unless heated).

Everything else my doctor told me is ok in small amounts. So I've had my occasional peanut butter, bacon, tuna, hot dogs, etc. For me it's been a choice about eating healthier. I try to pick the healthier choice and "safer" choice when presented with options. Fortunately for me I don't like raw fish and many soft cheeses so those have not been hard to give up.

I know what everyone says about everything in moderation but to me it's not worth it if my doctor told me to avoid it. If she told me it's ok occasionally then that's what I do. But if I ate something that was a no-no and something happened I would feel guilty for the rest of my life. IMO I'd rather sacrifice for 9 months than have that happen.

I just have to say and I am not looking to judge or start drama but the thought of our parents did it and we are all fine is not always the case. Yes maybe we are all fine but not all people can say that. The studies are out there to avoid certain things because things can happen. The studies do not say if you have a drink your baby will have fetal alcohol syndrome, they say it increases the likelihood of it. They don't say if you eat cold cuts you will have a miscarriage, again it just shows that it could happen due to listeria. My mom smoked with me and one of the side effects of smoking is a growth stunt. Well being that I am only 5'2" and stopped growing when I was 13 I would say that it looks like I might have been a victim of that statistic. Especially since I have size 9 feet and the doctors always thought I was going to be tall. Not that me being short is the worst thing in the world but still if she didn't smoke maybe I would have been taller.

Again I am not trying to make anyone feel bad about what they choose to do. At the end of the day it's your body and your baby and you can do what you feel is right. But to say our parents did it and we turned out fine IMO is not accurate. There are many parents who lost children and who have children with problems because of some of the choices they made. So yes we are all here and that's great but that doesn't mean the studies are wrong and everyone will be ok anyway so do what you want in moderation. The studies show correlations and possibilities not definite results. Everyone needs to make their own choices as to what's right for them. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pregnancy Food Taboos

Anything the doc told me to avoid, I avoided 100%. It was 9 months out of my life, just the first of many sacrifices required of parenthood, lol.

Here's where I think "everything in moderation" falls short when it comes to preggo eating-- in the case of foods that may contain bacteria such as listeria. For stuff like a few sips of wine at a wedding once or twice over the 9 months, sure, that's certainly moderate and can hardly be expected to harm your baby. But when it comes to sushi, soft cheeses, cold cuts... the moderation theory kinda goes out the window. All it takes is ONE CONTAMINATED FOOD to possibly cause lethal harm to the fetus. Even if you were the most moderate person in the world and ate the food ONE TIME during your pregnancy, that could be the time that the food contained listeria or such.

I am a foodie myself, but I totally valued the little DS-to-be more than the sushi.

I tend to agree with this. I do NOT judge anyone else for what they do but I feel the same way and I am a foodie too! I just moved South so I haven't tried sushi here but if I do it will be cooked or vegetable

I dunno. I am starting to prefer the debate of BFing versus formula just a little more than this one.
