Pregnant and "interviewing" first pediatrician next week...
Hi ladies -
I will be 28 weeks soon and I am interviewing my first pediatrican (recommended to me by by obgyn) next week. I'm just wondering if you have any tips/things to ask/general advice for me. I feel kind of awkward "interviewing" the Dr., but I realize the importance of it and I want to go in there with lots of questions so I don't waste their time.
Thanks so much!

I never interviewed the pediatrician. My OBGYN recommended him and also my SIL. Plus I've heard good things about the doctor and the whole practice that I just skipped the interviews...
eta...we are happy with the Dr.

I really didn't ask my doctor any questions... I just let him speak and wanted to get more of a feel for his personality- if he tried to rush me out, well then I knew he wasn't the doc for me.

I never interviewed a pediatrician. I was assigned one in the hospital and stayed with him for 25 years.

So what you are all saying is that when I give birth the hospital will assign me a pediatrician? So unless I really hate the person that is assigned to me then it is probably best to just go with who I end up with?

I didn't interview mine either. I had no idea how to find one here since we had just moved 6 months prior. I asked my OB for a recommendation, called them & spoke to the receptionist, then checked out their website. I figured I'd see how I liked him/her when we met in the hospital and if I was really unhappy I could switch. So far I've been very happy.

I interviewed several..
some questions that i think are important HOurs of operation who is the doctor on call when they are away or off? what hospital are they affiliated with and also is the covering dr. affiliated with them? what is their take on immunization? Do they follow the guidelines or are they open minded to what parents want? Do they have a specialty? ie: neonatology, GI, neuro, Adolescent medicine? who gives immunizations in the office? DR. Nurse, Medical assistant? how do they answer messages? do they call back , Nurse calls back? receptionist calls back?
Just a few.. i ask alot of questions so there are many more.. think of what 's important to YOU. Remember, if all goes well this will be thier dr. for at least 18 years. Keep that in mind if your dr. is really old!!!

I didnt really go in with a list of questions, the dr was so happy that we actually made an appt to meet him before DD's birth, he started going over things and then addressed any questions

Yes, if you don't give them the name of a pediatrician or yours is not affiliated with the hospital, the hospital will assign one automatically. You can always change later.

these are some of the questions I asked - many good peds seem to know the questions parents will ask ahead of time - mine I interviewed answered everything right off the bat with his initial "monologue" explaining the practice

I actually met a few from the practice while we were at the hospital, I liked all of them. Initially, we asked the ped about the other dr's, he even said, you may like one of the other dr's in the practice more than you like me, and I guess it happens frequently b/c he said they are all ok with people switching.

I never interviewed my pediatrician. Sounds so silly. I asked my friends and people I knew who they used and if they like them.

In addition to the basic questions about policies/procedures, etc., I also asked for some input on cord blood banking, and I asked about some specific things related to my medical history, medications and breastfeeding (I am asthmatic and wanted to know if my meds were safe, and about testing the baby for asthma)

Re: Pregnant and "interviewing" first pediatrician next week...
I didn't interview mine, but if I did, I would have asked if he/she has children of their own. Having children of your own gives them a different prospective. I like our pedi, but I wonder how quick he would be to recommend CIO if he had done that with his own children. Also, you may want to ask what his baby philosophies are- how soon does he rec taking the baby out? Is he Ok with a delayed immunization schedule-and especially if you plan on breastfeeding- is he/she supportive of that?
