Drinking Alcohol while Pregnant- Gwyneth seen 2x this week
Ladies,
I saw on the news yesterday a story about Gwyneth drinking Guinness in public, and now today the reports include 3 glasses of wine.
I am not pregnant but have always found it interesting how in the 80s Carla on Cheers would down beers very pregnant and now its a "crime"
Just curious about your thoughts on drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
If this is an old or controversial topic please don't flame me- I'm new here
from today's daily news" After yesterday's item that pregnant Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted downing Guinness with dinner on Tuesday, a reader tells me: "I sat next to her and Chris Martin at Lupa on Thompson Street [Wednesday] night; she had two or three glasses of wine in the time that I was there, and I left when they were partway through the main course."
While Guinness contains iron that can be good for a pregnancy, drinking wine when you're five months along is a tad more controversial.
Gwyneth and Chris were looking very much in love at a corner table in the back room of the popular SoHo restaurant, run by Mario Batali.
Continues the spy: "She looked gorgeous as usual, with the pregnant 'glow.' Her face did look large though, which, according to my superstitious Italian friend who was with me, means she is having a girl, since face changes during pregnancy mean a female child."

I have a friend who has three kids and drank beer the entire time she was pregnant- her babies were all 10 pounds +.... these kids are the smartest children I have ever met... boggles my mind....

Re: Drinking Alcohol while Pregnant- Gwyneth seen 2x this week
I'm not opposed to the rare glass of wine here or there during pregnancy. I don't think consuming 1 - 3 glasses of wine during the entire pg would be horrible. I had a sip or two of wine while PG. BUT when I say sip, I mean SIP as in my DH held the glass to my mouth and said "here, you can have one sip".
Three glasses of wine in one night? Way WAY too much.
I read something that scared me when I was pg - that if YOU feel tipsy by the amount of alcohol you drank that means the baby is pretty much drunk.

I've heard that Guiness is supposed to be good, but I don't know about drinking a whole pint.... And drinking a tiny bit of wine is ok, but 2 or 3 glasses?

Being my fiance owns a bar I was always drinking up until the day I found out I was pregnant. I would never drink while pregnant. I know how it affects me I can only imagine what it would do to the baby. it is just something I would not take a chance on. giving up drinking for months for a healthy baby is something I am willing to do.

This is my stance as well. Sure, i COULD have the occasional drink, in the end, the CHANCE is enough to have me NOT drink.

The way I see it there are so many things out of your control while pregnant that could go wrong and cause problems, so if you have control over what is best, then why risk it.

I agree that 3 glasses in one night is WAYYYY too much when PG. I would not be averse to having a glass here and there in my 2nd or 3rd timester but it is just careless and irresponsible to have more than that. Also like another poster said if something went wrong you would always wonder. I had a MC with my 1st PG so when I get pG again I don't think I'll do anything to risk another. Everyone has to decide for themselves what type of parent they are going to be though so I don't judge.

I also agree, the occassional drink is perfectly fine. But I wouldn't have 3 in one night. Too much.

I agree. I just don't want to take the chance. Even if they say an occasional glass of wine is ok, i still don't want to risk it.

Re: Drinking Alcohol while Pregnant- Gwyneth seen 2x this week
I plan on having a random glass of wine here or there in my 3rd trimester...especially towards the end. 3 in one sitting is alittle too much for me, but 1 later in the pregnancy is supposed to be okay. Plus 1 glass does not make me tipsy at all.
Also, I heard in Ireland they tell pregnant woman to drink a pint of guiness - that it is good for both mom and baby.
In the meantime, when i am craving a beer (one of my weird pregnancy cravings) i drink an O'Douls.

They do and they say the darker the beer the better. In France they tell woman to drink red wine!
My Dr. told me there was nothing wrong with having an occasional glass of wine.

They do say that in Ireland, I was living in Ireland during my entire pregnancy with Alex. He was born there. Everyone would tell me to have a pint that it was good for me.
I think it is fine to have a glass of wine here and there throughout your pregnancy if that is what you choose. I did, never more than a glass in a sitting, and Alex is fine. Attitudes regarding this issue are very different here in the States vs. other parts of the world. I am not saying that other places advocate getting drunk, I don't think anyone agrees with that, but they don't frown when they see a pregnant woman enjoying a drink.

I think its fine to have a glass of wine or a guiness here or there...but not 3 in one sitting...thats inviting danger.
theres no reports that mimimal drinking causes any harm...but moderate drinking has never been studied so why take the chance

Re: Drinking Alcohol while Pregnant- Gwyneth seen 2x this week
Here in the UK we are told its okay to drink 4 units of alcohol per week. We don't get any warning about things like caffeine or tea/coffee, I lived in Diet Coke and sugary tea throughout my pregnancy! And Kit Kats!!! Our midwives told us that there was a direct link between ladies who eat chocolate during pregnancy to happy babies!!!
In the olden days, ladies were told to drink Guiness as its a good source or Iron...so thats probably why Gwynny was drinking it.

Sorry to hijack here - but I was so amazed at the differences in the prenatal care in the US vs. UK/Ireland. I wasn't told to take prenatal vitamins, I didn't have a million warnings on what not to eat and what to eat. I didn't have an AFP test, no gestational diabetes test, etc. Alex is just fine and I had a wonderful labor and delivery experience. I want to go back and have all my babies there.

I craved beer too!! Isn't that weird? I'm not normally a beer drinker either but during the last few weeks of my pg all I could think about was kicking back with a Corona!

I thought i was the only crazy one! I was at a concert and this guy next to me was drinking from a cup and i wanted to rip it from his hand and gulp it down!
I have a party this weekend so i am going to have 1 O'Douls and enjoy it to the utmost.
Glad i am not alone with this craving!

Re: Drinking Alcohol while Pregnant- Gwyneth seen 2x this week
At the beginning I did NOT crave beer, and I LOVE beer. The smell and sight made me sick. Now I do crave it. I will have a sip now and then of DH's beer. I told him when you come and visit me, to bring me an Amstel Light and a GREEK SALAD

I feel the same about having babies in England, although the NHS is under a lot of pressure all the time and doctors aren't paid that great and nurses are paid a pittance, I felt that the care we got was exceptional. I loved the fact that it was very laid back and hands off...no stressful doctors visits and I loved the midwife care. I never once saw a doctor throughout my whole pregnancy (except for an anaesthesiologist in the delivery room! Also, the after birth care was brilliant...we get a midwife who comes to our house every day for up to 28 days if they feel it necessary, and then after they finish, we get a health visitor who comes for a few further visits.
Could you imagine what would happen to the British Isles if pregnant ladies were told to stop drinking tea! OMG...the government would stop working and there would be no weathergirls on television as they always seem to be pregnant!!! War is breaking out in The Midlands...oh dear, lets make some tea and then we will fight!!!
That's the spirit!! (must go watch Jonathan Ross now...)
eta to add that I can't spell anaesthesologist...whatever.

I'm not opposed to the occasional drink while you're pregnant, but three glasses of wine is probably excessive for one seating.
