pregnant and living far from your family?
Not planning to get PG for at least a few years, but I'm not sure where we'll be living when we do. The idea of raising kids away from my family makes me really sad, but DH's parents and my parents live 1000 miles away and we may not be in either city. I wish both families lived near eachother, it would make things so much easier. Also, I wish NY area wasn't so expensive
how far do you live from your family? your DH's family?

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
DH's family lives about 15 minutes away. My family lives about 2 hours and 15 minutes away. We usually go to my family for the holidays, but have told them they need to come down here this year because is due around that time!

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
I live about 4.5 hours away from my parents (they live in LI, I live in MD) and see them quite often (about once a month) because it's within driving distance (and I'm very close to them).
DH's family is scattered all over the Midwest. We don't see them often at all (1-2x a year), but DH isn't as close to them as I am to mine.
Not having family close by to help has been fine though. In fact, we're about to have #2.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
I will be TTC at the end of the year and living in Florida, while our family is in New York. Our plan is to visit them a few times a year (if I get preggo right away, i will be around 4-5 months at my nephew's bar mitzvah), and the families will come down for the birth. I figure we will make it work!

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
My sister is due in Oct and she lives in Aruba. It has been hard on her esp since she hasn't been well and now is on complete bedrest. My Mom is leaving next week for at least a month to be with her. We have the webcams all set up so that will be our main source of seeing each other. And they will be coming up at least once a year to visit us here and I will try to get down there. My parents visit them about 5-6 times a year.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
12 hour drive, 1 1/2 plane ride. We just moved down here when I found out I was PG. At first it didn't bother me, but as I get bigger and more emotional it sucks. I miss both our families. I grew up in a big Italian family with EVERYONE within a 10 mile radius. It bothers me that my kids won't have gram around the corner like I did. My grandmother is 81 and she and I are SUPER close. So that has me bothered. We are actually discussing if we should give up the big house and cheaper lifestyle, to get a (MUCH) smaller house and be near them all. We have until July to decide. (our lease is up then).

We live near my family but Dh's parents are 5000 miles across the atlantic in Ireland. It is hard them not being there to experience the day to day excitement but they have a webcam now so every few days we put the little guy on and they get to see him.

I live 2.5-3 hours from my family and 1 hour from DH's family. It would be nice to have them live even closer, but I know we'll see each other often.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
My Mom is in FL and most of my aunts, uncles, and cousins on her side (which I am closest to) live there also. DHs parents and siblings live in NC.
It does suck and it does make me sad ... especially for holidays (they all expect US to always come to THEM) but what can you do? We can't uproot our lives to go move near them just like they can't move here.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
we currently live in the city where DH's parents live... 20 min away. I was OK with it because I guess in the back of my mind it was always temporary while I finished school.. and now that we're married and would potentially be settling down, it makes me miserable to think we'd be out here forever away from my family.
It's a low COL etc and I have a job offer here and in NYC, and the decision is killing me

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
My parents live in Florida and the rest of my family is also out of state. I have my sister here in Ny. All of Dh's family live 15 min. away. It does stink that my parents are not here for the pregnancy, but they do visit often and we travel to Florida for the holidays.
i have become really close to Dh family so it's nice to have them close by.
My mom is flying to Ny for the birth and staying for a couple months with us, so I'm looking forward to that :)
we just rely on webcams, emails, and long phone calls :)

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
We're in NC and both of our families are in NY. I'm sad (and a little nervous) that I won't have my mom close by, but she's always just a phone call away.....She will be staying me with a few weeks after the babies are born, so at least I have that. It will be hard though......Only a handful of people will come to the baptism, their first birthday, etc., which is understandable since we are so far away, but it's a little sad though.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
Well over 1000 miles for my family.. They have relocated from Texas to Iowa.
His family is in brooklyn and hempstead but might as well be California and Hong Kong for all the visiting THEY do!
My baby is 3weeks old and I've only see my In Laws at the hospital. My father flew down and is spending a month with us (god send is what it really is).
I won't lie. It will be rough, but we plan to have our webcam ready and TONS of video and photos. Techology today is SOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo much better than the 70's is how I look at it.

Re: pregnant and living far from your family?
2500 miles from my family, except for my brother and SIL. They live 10 minutes away 40 minutes from my MIL- she has a medical condition though and really just loves DD, can't babysit or stuff.
But my parents are planning on moving here- hopefully this year.
