Preschool and Potty Training

I'm in a panic! Charlie is going to preschool 2 afternoons a week in September. (He'll be 3 at the end of September) I just got information from the school saying he has to be fully trained, no pull-ups, must dress himself and clean his own tush. Is it me or is that a lot to expect for a 3 year old program?
He has a fit whenever I even talk about potty training and wants nothing to do with it right now and I don't like the idea of forcing him before he's ready. Should I be pushing him more? Should I find another school?

Thanks!!!

Re: Preschool and Potty Training

You should start looking for another school and register him for both. He may not be potty trained and if he is he will most likely not be able to take care of it all by himself in such a quick time. I agree, that they should still help with buttons, zippers, cleaning up.

If he is not ready for potty training forcing it can make it worse. BUT what has helped me is the following: (this is daytime ONLY, nighttime was still in diapers)
For my daughter she was able to potty train, was 2.5. She really wanted roller skates. I told her that roller skates were only for kids who could go potty and not use pull-ups. That weekend she trained. After 3 days of no accidents she got her roller skates.

For my son he 3 and I knew he could go potty. He had done it a few times but was lazy. So one weekend my husband and I just stopped using diapers/pull ups. I used a timer and we went potty every 20 minutes. He asked me for a pull up a few times and I told him I had no more and he had to use the potty. That Monday he went to school in underpants. He had 1-2 accidents all week. He was in a daycare setting, not a 2 hour preschool program so the teachers assist with potty training.
We did have a few accidents that weekend and we did not go out anyplace with him but it was done and over.

My son's school said the same exact thing at orientation but I think it was more so that the teacher did have a whole class of kids in diapers and pull-ups.

We did manage to potty train him before school started but just barely but he still needs help wiping his tushie.

I know that there were still some kids in his class that came in pull-ups and were still in them at the end of the year.

I mean, what are they going to do? Have a diaper/pull-up check on the first day of class?

I think if you get started with the training and he has to wear a pull-up the first couple of days in school the teacher should be able to work with you on this.

Re: Preschool and Potty Training

As a PK teacher (4's) who's also taught 3's at another school I have to say most schools won't enforce it at the beginning of the year. We as teachers are not allowed to help a child wipe his hiney.

We've had children in pull up's (in my 3 class) until Oct. & would much rather them be in pull up's than be cleaning up accidents daily. I'm sure a lot depends on the school though.

In my 4's class after the first week or so, the no pull up's was enforced---we'd send a note home or I'd speak to the parents & see what was going on.

I do have to say w/ the 3's (& sometimes 4's) we do help them w/ zippers/buttons, etc. & there's always accidents still at times.
