Preschool school safety worries?
Does anyone else really worry about sending their dc to preschool? The trajedy at Newtown really freaked me out and I am so worried about sending my dd to preschool.
I've found a school I love. I love the teachers and the program but I don't think they are prepared or have any real secuirty meausres in place. They lock the doors during class but the doors are open during pick up and drop off for extended amount of time.
I went to 6 schools in total and they all have similar procedures. When I asked about security mesasures or plans they looked at me like I had two heads. Most of them said we lock doors.
I know the likelyhood of something happening is slim but I just don't know how to deal with my worry. I sort of think preschools sort of don't think they are at risk. Sorry for my rambeling just wondering if anyone else worries about this and has found a preschool with a real plan or who pratices so type of safety procedure.

You are so not alone. I worry about this a lot. Best I can say, is I wouldn't send DC's to a school that didn't have a locked door with a passcode/fingerprint/ or some other secure entry at least not when I am paying for it. I don't think I would like the doors being opened to all during drop-off/pick-up hours. It suck to worry so much, but this is how it is for us today.
I don't know how to deal with my worry either... it is so scary. I have nightmares about the bus..I still have a few years before that, but still. Many hugs to you, again..you are def not alone!

Re: Preschool school safety worries?
My son's temple nursery school kept door locked and you needed to buzz in. In the past month, they installed a new keypad system. I know they are also looking into hiring an armed security guard/off-duty police officer. That being said, even with a passcode system, it's glass doors. If someone really wants to get in, they're going to get in. I'm as freaked out as the next person but not much I can do besides live my life, love me son, and hope for the best.

Preschool school safety worries?
My DS's daycare has a preschool program. The front door is always locked and we have codes to get in. Each person has their own code so they can monitor who comes and goes. Camera system throughout and any visitors have to be let in.

Re: Preschool school safety worries?
Yes, but DC's school has overhauled their security policy and the school is air tight now. I love that they took the extra precautions to keep the children safe. Security, cameras, locked doors etc
My other dc's school hasn't changed anything, but it would be much harder for a stranger to get into that school

Re: Preschool school safety worries?
Yes i worry. The Sandy Hook massacre hits very close to home. Newtown is my home town, Sandy Hook was the elementary school i went to, and my mother is the school nurse there. I say "Is" because by the grace of god she was able to hide before the shooter came into her office. There were no kids anywhere near her or her office either.
DD is 4 and goes to a Nursery-8th grade catholic school. They lock their doors, have cameras, the usual. Is it going to prevent a murderer who has been planning a massacre with numerous guns from getting in? No. It didnt at Sandy Hook. I do worry but we all must live our lives and pray that our children stay safe.
Not a day goes by that i dont think about what happened in my beautiful town to those beautiful children and teachers. May they rest in peace
