primary sources
I have discovered www.jackdaw.com as a great primary document site to purchase SS materials for a 5th grade classroom. Does anyone else have any wonderful sites that have great primary sources or historical photographs (for free or to be purchased)?
Thanks in advance!! :)

Re: primary sources
I currently use a Doing History DBQ book that has lots of great primary documents in it to use. They are workbooks. And last year a child labor document was actually very similar to one in the book!
I would also download the past tests and use the document photos that have been used.
I have also looked through the text books for primary documents. It seems to me that the same ones are used over and over.
Don't know of any websites thought.

Re: primary sources
I haven't seen these but have heard they are good: www.abc-clio.com and search for Teaching with Documents series (direct link won't work)
also spotlight on america
and scholastic
If you have computers in your classroom, the Library of Congress American Memory collection, pbs, and history channel sites are great. There is SO MUCH online now...you can also search google by topic and grade
Also,I know you are looking to build a classroom collection but check with your school's librarian if you haven't already...most will let you borrow materials for extended periods of time.

Re: primary sources
I took a class with the library of Congress on Primary Resources. I have a few sites bookmarked on my school comp. but the one I remember is library of congress there are a lot of great free resources and lesson plans. I will try to get the other websites tomorrow.
I found the other website Primary Resources This site is great, if you search the collection you can find teacher created lesson plans. I actually have on posted on there from the class I took, lots of great stuff you can search by subject, grade level, what type of resource etc.
