privacy and shrubs
Hi all-Just moved into a new house and I have a side yard. My neighbors are very nosey and as soon as I come home they come outside and sit outside their house, which also has a side yard. I want to plant some shrubs for privacy along my property line bc i cannot sit at my outdoor table in peace. The soil is very sandy and dry. There is a big tree in the middle, so it is shaded. People before me had rhododendriums (sp is butchered, sorry) and they didn't make it....I want something higher than that to block their view. Any ideas? Beach grass?? evergreens??I just need something!!

Re: privacy and shrubs
if you are looking for quick and cheap you can plant hedges, they grow really fast and they do require maintenance. if you have the money get some leyland cypress, they dont require maintenance and grow at a decent rate. get them 5-6 feet and they will grow quick, 3-4 feet each year.

Re: privacy and shrubs
abbreviates might not be happy in sandy soil/tons of shade.
Firs are great for privacy screens. They are best planted where they can be allowed to achieve their natural shape and size. Concolor Fir (Abies concolor) grows quite wide and tall, almost rivaling Norway Spruce for growth. Their long, glossy needles stand out among evergreens. They are tolerant of various soils and some shade. Balsam (Abies balsamea) and Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri) can grow to 50' tall and 20' wide. They prefer good or heavy soil, but, if watered well for a number of years, fir can thrive in sandy soil.
I would recommend going to a real nursery/shrub center and bring a soil sample and explain the conditions. I haven't studied woodys/conifers yet so i can't be too sure on what exactly to recommend.
Grasses are great but typically you cut them back in the winter. We plan on using a mix of tall grasses, emperor wu hostas and lilacs as a privacy screen. Weird combo but it has different textures/heights and coloring.

Funny you mention combining the grass and shrub. I walked around the neighborhood and it seems a lot of people use a combo of both...grass on ends, shrubs in the middle and it looks really neat. I will definitely bring a soil sample, it is just so sandy to me and afraid to spend money on something and have it not take.

Both Costco and Home Depot guarantee them for a year If they don't take, and die you get your money back.
