Property Tax Question

I am part of the town of Brookhaven. We are semi new home owners in our home for 2 years.

Our property taxes went up $1400! that seems like a lot to me. Is that a normal range?

We submitted the paperwork for Star too , we thought it had been processed but are checking with the town to be sure

eta - we found out we didnt make the deadline for star. It was our first time doing this! but there are no exceptions. Oh well. So the taxes will go back down in December. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Property Tax Question

There is a deadline for star (I think it's March or April, I can't remember which) but if you missed the deadline, i could see the taxes going up $1400.

Checking with the town is a good idea - Good Luck! Chat Icon

Re: Property Tax Question

We bought our house in APril '06 and our taxes have gone up about $650 since bought (last year was our first new tax bill) so that sounds about right to me. The $1400 should be reduced when you get star but by then the taxes will go up again because it is a new year.

I live in the town of islip.

Yep, I was going to say it sounds like you lost STAR. Our taxes went up the same amount. We applied for '09 so they will go back down for our Dec. tax bill.

Re: Property Tax Question

This intrigues me. DH and I bought our house in 2007, we closed on 2/28/07, and the deadline for STAR was 3/1 and we made it just in time. My question is do we have to reapply every year? Because we just made a year owning the house in 2/08 and we didn't reapply or anything.

No, you don't have to reapply. It's a one shot deal.
