Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up - UPDATE
me and DH bought the house in october 2012 ... 2 days before closing we found out the taxes in the listing were not correct and actually about $1100 more than we thought ... fine not happy but i figure it is what it is ... well i wouldnt of been fine if i would have known that taxes go up over $2200 in one year... is this the norm?
i am in shock i had no idea taxes go up that much and if i would have known i would have really reconsidered buying our house.
If it goes up that much every year i really dont know if we are going to stay; we may not be able to afford it eventually
Update :
ok so its a one time charge. I owed money from the taxes last year because of the exemption they couldnt take if off whichi i knew about but the way its shown it makes it seem like my taxes went up that much. i obvioulsly cant read the bill right Next year it will be going back down to almost the orginal amount i thought it was.
thanks for all the input and i am so happy it jsut the one time charge

Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
i dont know what the norm is, but since we bought our house 3 years ago our taxes have gone up a couple of hundred dollars EVERY year. we are also almost 1000 dollars short in escrow because of this. either your mortgage payment goes up or you can pay it in a lump sum. it SUCKS

I know how you feel. About 2 or 3 years ago my taxes jumped nearly 1500 mostly because of a large percentage increase in school taxes. It really stinks, I always ask myself the same question on how long we can stay here. I just continue to grieve my taxes each year

i will def. try to greive again this year last year i tried but i was told i was paying what i should be.
I really hope its not like this every year. I now understand why people dont want to pass school budgets. I personally cant afford a jump like this every year.

Re: Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
We bought 3 years ago, our taxes have jumped 2,000 dollars and that is with grieving. We don't think we are going to be able to keep up with these increases. Taxes are now over 12 k, In 3 more years will they be over 14k?
We can stay but at what cost? We can only cut so much, we have to still save for retirement and college.

Re: Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
That sounds like a lot. Maybe your taxes were adjusted because you're the new owners and the previous owner with whatever his tax situation was is gone. I know the first year in our house we actually were receiving the previous owners veterans benefit on our taxes so we were paying a lot less then we should've been. After the first year our taxes were adjusted based on our situation and our STAR and we saw a decent jump in our taxes going into that 2nd yr.
Not sure what's a typical increase but we've been in our house going on 9 years now and we've gone up from around $6800/yr to $9700/yr.

Keep us updated. You'll want to ask if your assessed value went up or if increase is from tax rate

Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
Ours went up right after we purchased due to CO's that were closed just before closing causing the house to be reassessed.

They would have most likely had to have been taken care of in order to close. At least that's how it was with us.
A few months after closing We got a letter from the town (I think) saying that the house had been reassessed bc they were now aware there was a deck and a bathroom in the basement.

Oh ok then no they were no COs that had to be closed. I guess I'll find out if I was reassessed for some other reason.

Re: Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
In Nassau county every property was reassessed every year. It was just changed to every 4 years. Unfortunately it is entirely possible your taxes increased that much. Nassau county is in a precarious financial position and so are the school districts. School district tax rates have increased dramatically. Take a look at mynassauproperty.com. You will be able to see the assessment history and tax bills for the past several years. If there isn't a major jump in your assessment, the tax rates are to blame. If there is a big increase in your assessment, you will need to investigate why and you may be able to grieve your assessment.
If this is Suffolk, you are not reassessed yearly (there are exceptions though). Any increase in actual taxes due is probably the increase in the tax rate and some other variable that you aren't aware of (i.e., a relevy of an exemption left from the previous owner, an unpaid sewer bill,etc.). For the most part Suffolk doesn't have the huge jumps like Nassau - but it does happen. My own Islip taxes have gone up over $2400 since the 2009/10 tax year

Re: Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
Town of babylon and lindenhurst sd had a huge jump in tax rates due to sandy damage, but $2k a year seems steep. Go on the town of babylons website and you can pull up your property card where you can see the past assessments and taxes. If you didnt get a notice of change in your assessment, its probably some sort of relevy or there was an exemption on the property from the former owner that they removed.

Property taxes .. how much do they usually go up
We had to pay a bunch extra our second year bc the previous owner had a firefighter exemption which they didn't remove the first year. So we had to pay the year plus what they forgot to charge the previous year. In all we've been in our house for 6 years and our taxes have gone up less than $1000 in all that time.
