National average in the US for property taxes is...
$1800
what are we getting on LI that is worth 3, 4 or more times as much.
I am really curious.
aside from possibly a better education (although a lot of studies show that isn't necessarily the case – national test scores etc are available online), what are LI tax payers getting for SO much more $$$??

IMO, I think it's the way schools are set up on LI. We have way more districts than is necessary, and every district has a superintendent, various asst superintendents, coordinators, etc. - each making low-mid 6 figures.
I believe in most other parts of the country, you don't have a different school district every few miles like we have here. We could save sooo much $$ if we just combined school districts. Look at Newsday they next time they publish test scores - are all those districts really necessary???

I don't think so
IMO, it's corruption. just like those lawyers who were caught having a full time job with many different SD's
that's probably just scratching the surface of the fraud being committed.

now add the corruption
what % of property taxes go to the schools? it's revolting!!!!!!

no property taxes go to schools. School taxes go to schools.
We fund upstate. Nice..their taxes are nice and low.
Yes, LI is desirable but until the corruption is gone and we stop funding upstate, our taxes will be high.
I also agree that we have too many school districts. Too many salaires, pensions, benefits.

my parents live in East Meadow, more than 1/2 of their total property taxes go to the schools - the bill is itemized.
eta: less than 300 kids attend Meadowbrook elementary school. why can't these kids be bussed to another school? this is just 1 example of outrageous waste!

so then does that mean the national average is just for the property tax on you home? not including all the other nonsense - schools, sanitation, etc.?

most other areas also have a LOT less SD's per town. no need to have so many school officials, superintendents and administration with less school districts.

we have duplication of services & blatant abuse of systems & services that other places must not have. many of our fire districts, water districts, sanitation & road work & other things are over managed & overlapped. The civil service unions here are able to encourage & conceal abuse at all levels. We pay.

I think you are on to something...
Unions
they are not a strong in other parts of the country
I ran into an old friend today from HS
he is FDNY- and was considering moving to FL to be a cop- however- if you get hurt on the job in FL- you have 90 days to come back to work- or you are fired
in NY if you are hurt- you can go out of 75% of you pay for ever
that's just one example
both my parents were teachers- so I always saw unions as a positive thing- but I can see how they are $$$$$

My in-laws live in Minnesota and their property taxes are just for their property. They do not include trash pick up. They have to contract private companies. Also for schools they have to pay seperately for buses and sports. Their taxes are maybe 1/4 of ours.
I think the taxes here are horrible and sometimes wonder why we still live here.

ITA!!! and i'm a teacher. there is a lot of consoldiating that could be done that would save tax payers millions.
most other states run school districts by county, not each and every little town with their own district.

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
I don't know if it's schools. I really dont have an excuse. We have properties upstate 1 by Binghamton(AKA no mans land)... 4.5 acres with a structure total taxes are under $1000. Then another upstate by Fort Drum (WatertownAKA even more no mans land) and the taxes are $5000 for about 1/2 an acre on a lake with a structure. The taxes for the lake house are about what we pay to live in Eastern Suffolk,
the one on the lake can't be for services either because it's a private road and there is no garbage pick up, plowing OR FIRE SERVICES!

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
I used to live in the most expensive county in NC a few years ago.
I had a 3 bedroom ranch, 2 bathrooms, 2 car garage, 1/2 acre land. I paid $1200 per year in property taxes.
That being said, the incomes of the teachers and admin personel were MUCH lower. I would say about 50% less for teachers at the time.
The schood districts are not as numerous and the incomes don't even come close.
They did not have $$$$ being stolen like Roslyn, etc...
Lots of corruption on LI
The mentality is that you can increase the taxes whenever you want and if you don't like it you must be a bad citizen and kids will suffer the consequences.
The teachers have unions. Not always the case in different states.
Honestly, I don't see that much of a difference between schools in NC and NY.
The libraries have computers. They have scholarships. They have better schools and not so good schools just like on LI.

nope - because their property taxes are lower than ours
I think its too many layers of govt (villages, town, county) and too many school districts.
i was at a conference about Building LI and Suozzi was speaking about the decrease in mortgage recording tax revenues - we are the only state (besides massachusetts) that charges a hefty mortgage tax - how do the other states live without it then??

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
I don't understand how a town would support it's school system with people only paying $1800 in property taxes. I guess the education system is funded thru the state with income taxes?
I think that the main problem though is all of the bureaucracy. We have a town government, village government, county government, state government.... Is it all necessary? get rid of some of these people!

This isn't true, your school taxes go to the district you live in, as do your municipal taxes. The only way downstate supports upstate or vise verse is through state taxes and use taxes like sales tax.

Iknow in Southern Florida the property taxes do not include sanitation pick up, my BFF is looking at houses and is from up here and was shocked to find that out, she had to rule out a bunch of houses b/c the taxes w/the sanitation were too high.

You would think with the high taxes that we pay that we would have a PAY fire department instead of volunteers!! I am very grateful for the volunteers BUT doesnt anyone think that having a fire dept is important??

But is a single district per county the answer? I work for the NYC Board of Ed, which is essentially one big school district for the five boroughs. We serve over a million students. There's probably more corruption, pointless administrative positions, and red tape in that system than in all the little districts on LI!

Thanks - I was going to post this. I live way up there in upstate NY and my taxes are only $1500 less than my Mom's house in Syosset. The kicker? My Mom's house was worth 4x's what mine is. Yes, my house is newer, but everything else was comparable (house size, property, updating, etc). My taxes also do not include garbage pickup.
People up here say the opposite... that "upstate taxes support downstate/NYC".
I wish I would have heeded somone's advice when I bought my house... "You can pay off your mortgage but taxes are forever"!

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
Let's face it...government is as crooked as the day is long. Even when we do uncover corruption...nothing really happens. A few people get a slap on the wrist, and then your taxes go up again to make up for the money that was stolen from you in the first place.
I hate to say it, but if taxes keep going up every year and the same pace they have been rising...I'll be priced out of LI within 10 years.

my school taxes are higher than my property taxes.
I have my itemized receipt for my property taxes. No school taxes are included except $79 for Nassau Community College.
The school taxes are 65% of my $7300 per year taxes.
