Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
I know this is a popular topic lately, so I thought I would add to it.
Has anyone weighed the pros vs. cons of moving out of NY? and if so, what was your result?
DH and I are seriously contemplating it (well, me more so than him)

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
I wouldn't have had an issue moving out of state if I didn't have very strong ties with my current job.
Ive been here almost 7 years now... with no real plans on leaving anytime soon. I am pretty happy.

All of mine & DH's family is here so it's not an option for us. We prefer to be close to them.

Most of our family is in NY, but we wouldn't have a problem moving out of state. You need to live your life for you, not your family.

Thanks for the insight... We live our life for ourselves...but it's great to be around family. We're a closeknit family that appreciates spending time together... Wait...why should I explain myself to you?

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
We look into NJ, CT, and upstate NY, all within 2 hours of here. That would be my ideal--close enough to be very close to family, but houses a little cheaper. We just both have to find jobs in the same area. Growing up in NJ (central, an hour commute to NYC) I actually don't really like LI too much and would be anxious to leave. It's much more congested than where I grew up, and for the most part people in stores/on the roads are much more rude. I would rather raise my kids somewhere else. I have friends here that I've made in my 6 years on LI, but I think we'd make friends anywhere, and hopefully have enough room for all our LI friends to visit whenever they want to!

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
Honestly, it depends on so many things. JT and I moved to Massachuetts a few years back so he could finish college. We lived in Boston and loved it, but we could only afford to live in some unsavory areas, so we moved to Southern Mass., and he commuted to Boston everyday. Was it cheaper than here? Yes. Was it worth being away from our families and friends? No, not at all. We were really miserable and spent a lot of time traveling to NY. The thought to move out of state again has crossed my mind, however, even living in Boston, the slower pace of things drove us nuts. We like the pace of living on LI and in NYC. It's more our style. Plus, my husband works in television, and we would be really limited as to where we could move. We both have very decent jobs here with good futures, so I don't think that for us, at least, it will be an option again. But like I said, it depends on the type of jobs you guys have, your family/friend situation, what you prefer in terms of style of living, etc.

ditto. We like that fact that we live close to our family and friends and that we can get together whenever we like. If we moved out of state or even further out on LI / upstate NY, we'd be able to afford a nice/big house but I know we wouldn't be as happy. We're just not willing to compromise on where we want to live.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
We talk about this all the time, but I love my job. My husband owns his own company and it's very movable. He would be all for it since he's not from NY to begin with. For myself, I always look to see what other universities have positions open - and there are many - and I think I may start sending resumes.
Pros of staying in NY: My job. Tons of friends. I do love the idea of being near NYC and near the beach as well. I also love living in a place with all four seasons.
Cons of staying in NY: The price of housing on LI. The never-ending traffic here.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
I live in philly - pros - our house cost nothing in comparison to LI prices and we have a nice sized house with nice size lot. Cheaper daycare, and just generally, cheaper standard of living. Con - we're far away from family, which was particularly difficult in the first few months with our daughter. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it is raising a baby without ANY help from family. Going out to a movie is virtually impossible. Another con is that I just miss the conveniences of NY - everything is quicker and better. Sometimes it's just so backwards here in Philly - and Philadelphia itself is tiny and miniscule in comparison, though cute in it's own right. I really do miss the beaches And I'm a little sad that my daughter won't have the same childhood experience that I had growing up on LI.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
Pros-Life will leave me with so many more options. I can be a SAHM if I want. We can drive to work if we want We can send our future kids to public school if we want. An affordable mortgage is going to make such a difference and not having to commute will add an extra 2 hours of personal time onto my day.
Cons-I would love to have my family with me, but I need to do what is best for my new family.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
I moved to AZ a couple of years ago.
Pros: I wanted to own a home and the possibility of that happening on LI was none. I couldn't even afford to buy a condo. I started to think about how my living on LI limited the plans that I had for my life, not enhanced them. I couldn't afford a home, definately couldn't afford to have kids. The move was the smartest I've made in a long time when it comes to my future.
Cons: I had to leave some wonderful friends. Some that I've known my whole life. My BF had to leave his whole family. It's been tough, but I can tell you that they like having a warmer climate to vacation too.
Good luck with your decision. No matter what you decide, distance can't hurt family connections. Trust me. You find a way.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
Pros of living in Colorado: - cheaper cost of living - beautiful weather and scenery - friendlier people
The only cons that we've had to deal with so far is work. Our company's office here is pretty small, and unless you have specific skills (or even if you DO have specific skills) it's hard to find work on a project. Right now I'm in limbo, charging my time to overhead while I try to find client work... Oh, and one other con is being so far away from family.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
I did live out of state and moved back. I don't think I really want to live in the areas that are more affordable at this point in my life, that's my personal preference. I love all the things the NY metro area has to offer and not willing to live without them right now.
As for family, it is nice to be close to them for support and all that, but also so that you know them. I moved back as my nieces and nephews were in the toddler ages, so I have had the opportunity to be a part of their lives and know them in a way that I never would have if I was still far away. I also have cousins who live long distance who really never got to know their aunts, uncles or cousins. That means a lot to me, and I am not sure I could give that up right now.

Re: Pros and Cons of relocating out of state?
We've weighed this out too. Over the past 3 years, a good portion of both our families moved out of state. Mine to FL, and DHs to NC. For us is went something like this:
Pros of moving: Could afford a MUCH nicer house, probably our dream home; be closer to family; get to raise our son around his family
Cons: Lose our very secure jobs here in NY with great benefits; lower standard of living but also much lower salaries; possible difficulty finding jobs for both of us since our industry is saturated; still leaving some friends and family behind; will miss NY
So far, the Cons are winning. We are staying in NY for now. But also because I refuse to move near my in-laws and DH refuses to move near his. So we'd have to pick somewhere in the middle (between FL and NC) and know nobody anyway!

same for me.
Also, homes and stuff are cheaper, but you generally don't make as much as you do, or could, in NY (or any big city for that matter)

One positive of relocating is not fighting with your family. I see the all so rarely that we always get along.
