Pros/Cons about cord blood banking
Please talk to me about the pros and cons about cord blood banking.
DH and I weren't going to do it, but now he's starting to doubt our decision and wants to seriously look into it.
What EXACTLY is it good for? How long is it good for?
Any and all info you could provide would be SO much appreciated!

i really don't have the pros and cons... but I can tell you that with DD we did not bank her cord blood. There are just too many unknowns and we just don't have that kind of money.

Re: Pros/Cons about cord blood banking
We banked our DD's cord blood. It was pricey but they did offer a payment plan and I just kept saying to myself...."What if??? Go forbid something happened and she got sick at least we would have it available to try". I don't know, I sorta look at it like an insurance policy. You have it "just in case"but you hope you never need it. I figured in the grand scheme of it all the upfront cost was worth it and now it's only $125/yr to store it forever. We will bank DC #2 as well when the time comes.

Re: Pros/Cons about cord blood banking
I would ask your OB and Ped. They are the ones that helped us to decide not to do it privately but rather to donate to the public blood bank at NSUH with our DS. IMO alot of the info out there is put out by the companies that are looking to profit from this when a lot of the info is hopeful at best. I will ask the OB and Ped again this time around in case the info has changed (DS was born a little less than 2 yrs ago).
ETA: For us the money was not an issue at all - in fact the OB said the money would be better spent putting it in a 529 for DS. We didn't want to "waste" the cord blood and after speaking with the Dr.'s and hearing what they had to say we felt the public bank would make the best use of the cord blood.

From what I have read, They aren't exactly sure. They suspect 10 years.

This is pretty much why we did it as well. While I'm not sure it will ever be "useful" I didn't want to be in the position that if God Forbid ever got sick, I would be beating myself up over not having done it.

Same here! We figured with the payment plan it really is affordable. There are lots of uses for the cord blood if need be and there will be more in the future.
We went to a presentation by Viacord which was helpful as well.
