Proud Mommy Moment
DH & I have been doing sign language with DD almost since birth. Not alot of sign, but enough to communicate needs/wants. DD was quick to pick up the sign for "more" to let us know she was hungry (she now properly uses the sign for "eat" most of the time). She also learned the sign for "cookie" pretty quickly. One sign that has been especially difficult is "thank-you" I think in part because she doesn't understand the concept. She never uses it.
Monday though, she wanted something and I told her to say "please" before I would give it to her, and made the sign which she imitated. This was only the second time I showed her that sign. Yesterday, she wanted something, and again I told her to say please, but this time I didn't show her the sign - she just did it!!!! I'm so happy that she picked it up quickly and used it when asked.

WOW. D- this is great! We did some sign language with DS too. It is supposed to really help to avoid frustration from the language barrier.
Good job little girl!!

that is soo great! I wish I knew how to even begin this, I want to do this with DS so bad.
We bought a book called Sign Language for Babies and Toddlers and learned the basic signs . . . mommy, daddy, more, eat, hungry, drink, thank-you, diaper and then tried to use them whenever we said the word. She picked up "more" first and used it whenever she wanted to eat. Eventually she understood "eat" was different than "more" but still uses "more" unless you ask her if she wants to eat. If she does, she will sign "eat" and if she doesn't she will repeat the sign for more.
She only uses the signs that we showed her consistently (she doesn't use mommy or daddy at all - but she does say ma-ma and da-da).
Now that she "gets it" I sign the colors for her and numbers and the alphabet.
