PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
Do yourselves a favor - make sure that with every diaper change, you pull back the remaining foreskin of your LO's peesh to ensure it is not healing back together.
NO ONE told us this and at 4 months, it had to be manually seperated by our ped and it wasnt until 12ish months that it was 100% healed and I wasnt worried about reattching!
In a "circ" thread from earlier today, I once again saw another mom make mention of her ped neglecting to mention the pulling back of remaining skin to prevent reattaching. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
You should see a little ridge, mushroom head if you will! If you do not, it could be reattaching!!

Re: PSA - mom's of infant (circumsized) boys
Oh yes- I had to do this for @ 8 months for my son. He did not like it but it would always try to reattach.
Also you can put vaseline on it to prevent it from reattaching.

YES! I can't stress this enough, many Mom's of boys had to have their son's re-circ...and I'm hearing its so common now. I don't understand why they don't tell you this at the Ped or even in the hospital!?

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
all you have to do is pull the remaining skin back (or up) and just clean around the head and make sure the skin isnt healing back together. Will make more sense when you are actually doing it nothing hard!

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
I wish they would explain this better in the hospital or the first ped appt! Most times it's Mommy changing the diaper and we don't have those parts...who knew you needed to do that!
I usually push down at the base on the skin when I clean and it pops the penis forward to make it longer to clean.
Funny how after two boys this kind of conversation no longer makes me uncomfortable.

Thanks for posting this, I am going to forward this to my good friend.
I keep telling her this, and she insists bc her ped never told her she isnt going to do it.

I think I was told to not touch it at all, but I didn't listen and used to pull the skin down. I could totally see it re attaching if I didn't.

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
Thank you ladies! This is exactly the info I needed. My DH and I need to make a decision, I don't want it to be on the fly in the hospital when they ask us, so it helps to know what care would need to be done if we decide to do it!

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
I have two boys and I don't know why the peds do not tell us these things. My second son has a lot of extra skin so we constantly have to pull back on it, but learned th hard way when we saw it re attaching when he was around 5 months old and had to have the ped help us with it, took just two minutes but still it's uncomfy for them and gets red..it helps to pull it back after a warm bath since the skin is softer for those moms who haven't been doing it and you see it reattaching, then apply Vaseline around it.

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
doctors don't tell you these things! i am a peds ER nurse, and i tell moms all the time, and even with little girls too. people don't know that you have to really get in there and open stuff up to clean, especially after a poop. you would be amazed and shocked what i find in there when i do my exam :( very sad. so many little kids end up with UTI's too because of this. they are too concerned with other things, and forget about the little (but big) things you know?

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
No one told us this either. All the nurses and drs did was comment on what a great circ he had...now it looks horrible because it reattached so we called the dr and he said to pull apart. I washed my hands and even did antibacterial, pulled it apart gently, then applied Vaseline with a q-tip. Guess what? It got infected and only the one side swelled SO much. It was like a big blister all most. The swelling made his skin stretch and now in the middle he has a lot of extra skin so we have to pull it down a lot to clean. Then 6 months ago, I gave DS a half a cashew to try and he started to throw up and his eyes swelled shut and he was swelling all over his body. We went to take his clothes off so we could check out the rest of his body and his penis swelled to a few times it's size stretching out that skin even more. There is so much loose skin on the shaft now that we have to get it fixed.

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
Thanks for posting this. Wish I had seen this earlier. No one told me to do this and I'm pretty sure my DS has reattached. It looks like he was never circumcised (he's 10 months old). I will probably have to have him redone now-so mad! He's already had surgery once and that got infected resulting in him being readmitted to the hospital and a rough 24 hours. Last thing I wanted was another surgery. Soooooo peeved! My poor little man

YES!! The nurses told me to wash DD normally, not to worry about it that it would clean itself out!
I am so glad my mom was there to help me those first few days, she taught me how to really clean everything!

Re: PSA - moms of infant (circumcised) boys
I wish they had told us this at the hospital too. at ds one month checkup our ped told us it looked like it was reattaching and that she'd pull it back @ his 2 month appt. she did and it was such a difference, it looked 1000 times better. i thought i was maintaining it ok but at his 4 month visit she did have to do a little more. It still tends to want to stick back though, he turned 5 months today and just tonight i had to peel back a little. I now have a better eye for what it should be so i'm able to nip any issues in the bud.
