PSA- check your credit card due dates- esp if you don't get mailed statements
one of my cards is always due on the first of the month
I no longer get statements mailed to me
well today I check just so I could write the date in my book
and it was moved up 2 days to the 30th!
right under the new due date was a notice about late payments- $39 charge and interest rate to 24.99%

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO DH AND ME with a bank of america bill we have. it was our largest bill and we had locked in a 5.something rate a few years ago. acct has been closed, we just pay it off. It was on auto pay to always pay on the 3rd of the month b/c the statment always fell between the 4th and 6th. I hardly ever look at statements b/c it was set up on auto pay.
well...june's statement closed on 6/2 so when it auto paid on 6/3 i was late. They call us a few weeks ago (even though every month since then has still been autopaid) claiming we owe $1200 min pyment. they said they sent a letter stating the interest rate would be doubling, but I never got that..so i think this was their way of getting the interest rate raised.
they marked my report as 30 days delinquent, and the interest rate is almost 28% now. holy sh***
I cannot believe the bull these companies are pulling. I"ve transferred most of this balance to a 1.9% card for now.
ughhh...

This "due date change" has been going on forever...
Its not by the day in the month, its by days in a billing cycle which is typically 30.

I hate the fact that credit cards are a necessary evil. When I get all mine paid off, I am going to have only 1 and watch it LIKE A HAWK. These credit card companies are starting to prey on even their best customers.

My prediction is that people will get eventually get back money in some sort of class action over all of these charges and rates. It amounts to usury. The only reason for this not to happen is because the banks lobby judges and Congress a bit too much. Right at this moment in time, carrying even a small balance is very costly.

Yup, I noticed this too! Also, I just got a notice on one of my cards that they are raising my rate to 29.99%...their reason...to make up for their lost business or something along those lines...I think they're smoking something strong up in that Citibank! Can you believe it????!!!!

How did they put a 30day mark on your credit report when you were only late a few days?

Yep, two of mine did this to me also - Bank of America and Discover. This is just another reason why I only use CCs for large purchases and pay them in full each month.

I have no idea...and their credit dept, supervisors all suck. I guess b/c i wasnt checking (which i know is my own fault, but when you have something on autopay for 2+ years and never charge on that account, you tend not to look closely), and the minimum kept going up every month since june (unknown to me as i was autopaying) they consider that in default b/c my payments werent covering the ever doubling minimums.
Now that we're caught up they havent removed the mark on my report so thats one more thing i need to deal with.
turds....

Re: PSA- check your credit card due dates- esp if you don't get mailed statements
this happened to me like 3 months ago with my Discover card.
I have a spreadsheet set up because I pay almost all my bills online. So I just go into my spreadsheet...see when things are due and pay them. I also keep track of my balances because I'm desperately trying to pay off my credit cards.
Well I noticed my Discover balance wasn't going down at all. I'm just paying the minimum until I pay off one of my other cards. I looked back and realized my due date was changed from the 2nd to the 29th. So three months in a row I had late charges.

see that's the thing that confused me...some of my cards due dates are pushed back
but this one is moving up
and it's almost like they know people are going to mess up b/c of the new warning they put
I am only paying 5% on this card - so raising it to 24% is quite a bit

That's not new. Both my chase and Amex have done that for years.
Every statement is a different due date. I usually freak out every month. I can't never say, it's due today, tomorrow. It changes every month and it's hard to keep up.

This is why I check my bills every single month. I pay bills on my payday and make a list of what's due when for the month so I know which paycheck I use to cover it.

Re: PSA- check your credit card due dates- esp if you don't get mailed statements
For the person who went to non-preferred rate, you may or probally was late 2 times within a 6 month periord. This is a standard practice built into your aggreement.
You due date has a window of about 3 days, 4 tops. Remember, every month has different number of days in it.... as I said before...
As much as you need a credit card, its your responsibility to pay it off, on time :)

thanks for posting this. I will def check now. this is insane. they should be happy people are paying their bills. the economy is so bad, people dont have jobs so sure - increase interest rates and charge late fees. To me this doesnt add up!

im not sure if this is for me or not, but I took a look back on the statements to check the dates and it was always the 4th /5th/even 6th of the month..going back to dec of last year..it was just June that changed out of nowhere. After june it went back to 7/5, 8/4, etc. I could kick myself for not checking so closely with this account.
i specifically set it up with them to auto-pay purposely to make sure it gets paid on time. Ughhh

Re: PSA- check your credit card due dates- esp if you don't get mailed statements
I hate that the date changes, why can't it always be the 15th?
Anyway, I notice Bank of America moved some of my dates back to comply with the new law of having XX amount of days from when you receive bill till when its due.
My whole schedule is off now

I just today got a letter from CITIBANK with this info as well. My card will be going up to a 29.99% rate because they arent making money. I only owe like 500 on this card. I have another CITIBANK card with a 0% rate. I called them today when I got the letter. I got a whole big line of BS as to why the rate is being raised. I told them to opt me out and they said the card will be terminated at the expiration date of the card. Okay fine. Bye...
Oh and he ended the call with thanks for being a loyal customer for 11 years. Sure thing, thanks for nothing...

Because unless you have a promotional rate, you pretty much agreed in their terms and conditions when you opened the card that they have the right to change the rate whenever they please.
It's illegal to go past 29.99%.
And even if you have a promotional rate, they can jack the rate up if you are late (even by a day).
