I recently heard this as well!
The other secret is to make sure you take the battery out immediately and let the phone dry out completely... I am talking for at least 24 hours... before you put the battery back in.
People tend to try and turn it on before the phone is dry and it shorts it out permanently. Just have a little patience and your phone can still work!
I dropped my blackberry in water a couple of months ago and it is still going strong!
