As I take a sip of my Poland Spring...
I don't care where they get bottled water from as long as it is not from the East River (any other nasty river can go here). It's convenient and refreshing, it serves its purpose.
There is no water coming into your tap from the East River, or the Hudson River, or any river. If you live in the city they come from reservoirs upstate. If you live on LI they come from aquifers. Both are clean and pure. Both go through extensive testing and filtering processes. Your bottle of Poland Spring had absolutely no regulations on it.
I have never been one to back down from a dare...I will drink the tap water. If I die, I will be pizzed.

Re: PSA: if you drink bottled water...
I saw that this morning. I'll buy a bottle on the go, but drink tap at home or from the filter at work.
I wonder if the boroughs get their water from different sources? Brooklyn tap tastes fine to me, but the tap water at work (NYC) tastes awful. I can only drink it from the filter.

The aquifers on LI are not always clean and pure. If you go on the EPA website, you can find a number of superfund sites on LI that have polluted the groundwater here.
The drinking water is clean on LI because it is tested and filtered, but from things I have read and talks I have had with environmental engineers, I might take my chances with tap water from other areas.

If I still lived in NYC, I would never buy bottled water. The water from the tap is the greatest!
Now here in LA is a different story. I even have a filter for water I COOK with
I filter my own water too here in The OC. No we don't really call it that here

Yes, but those are in the uppermost aquifer which is not where our current water supply comes from. Our tap water comes from much deeper down where pollution has not touched it. Future generations are going to have a problem if we do not stop polluting the groundwater closer to the surface.

Last year MTBE was found in the water supply in the town where I grew up. I understand what you are saying, but I still don't trust that the aquifers where our water comes from is 100% pure.

Well, its never going to be 100% pure, and that is why it is tested. They found MTBE in the water, probably from a gas station and it leached into the groundwater. This could happen in the place they are taking the bottled water from. However, since there are no regulations for testing on bottled water, you will not know if there it MTBE or any other contaminants in that bottle.
What I am trying to say is the perception that bottled water is so pure and tap water is dirty and disgusting is incorrect. People are spending a fortune on it, throwing money away, and also causing huge environmental issues by consuming it.
Its not only the bottles that are thrown away instead of recycled, but also the carbon footprint that is left from the manufacturing and the transport and distribution of the bottles.
ETA: I do drink bottled water occasionally, when there is no place else to get water. But I keep a reusable bottle at my desk at work and fill it from the tap every day. At home I always drink tap water.

Re: PSA: if you drink bottled water...
I'll drink tap water over bottled water ANYTIME. It's regulated and frequently tested when it comes from my water supplier (yes, it comes from the LI aquifer, but not to your tap, it comes from a water company unless you have well water). Bottled water has not standards whatsoever. I do drink it on the go for its convenience.

I agree on all counts, single serving bottled water is my BIGGEST environmental peeve. I hope our children are resourceful enough to build homes & cars out of all the empty bottles we left for them. As of right now over 40% don't get recycled & it would take a minimum of 800 years for 1 poland spring bottle to "disappear". I buy bottles only for parties, DH & I wash/refill empty ones over & over. we have well water & we drink it. Its been tested annually.
