PSA: Putting your DC's name on their stuff

Please be careful when you have DC's name on items they may carry, play with or use in public places, even at a bus stop. We were just given a sand toy with DD's name and I can't bring it to the beach.

It's easy for a stranger to walk up and say, "Hi Johnny, your Mom sent me to pick you up and bring you to her."

My parent were adamant about no names on clothing or school bags. When we were old enough to understand we were told if ANYONE, even if we knew them, other than our parents or grandparents asked us to come with them we had a family code word that had to be given.

ITA!! DD has a backpack with her name on it that we use for Daycare, but I carry it. When she's old enough to use her own, she'll be getting a new one without her name on it.

If you really want to put some kind of name on, initials are a good idea, but not a nickname. I have one cover up for swimming with Kiera's name on it but I would never bring it to a public place, I only let her use it at homes.

I remember getting into a discussion with BIL about this when we ordered a gift for DH's nephew when he was our ringbearer. I wanted to do initials and BIL told me to put his name because they live in Poland, not NYChat Icon

Sabrina doesn't have much with her name on it. A few bath towels, a necklace and a zipper pull (the last two she doesn't even want to wear)

So where do we draw the line at this? Are we now not supposed to call our kids by their names in public, because I know that when I speak to my son in public, any Tom **** or Harry can hear me and call him by his name, or by a pet name that I might call him.

Its just food for thought...

I tend to agree with you on this one, however, I guess it's a precaution that some feel is necessary to not print their DC's name on anything. My husband is so neurotic about this, that when he's out in public with Ava, he'll call her kiddo, kid, little girl, etc. Chat Icon That I think is overboard, but the not personalizing things that go in public with your DC seems more reasonable of a precaution than my husband's method!

To take the paranoia to the next degree.... there may be some "good Samaritans" who may become suspicious if this man is talking to this little girl, and doesn't even know her name....

DS has his name on his backpack, but we had to for school. We had to write his name, and the school also added a name tag to his bad. I think that's the only thing with his name, though.

Re: PSA: Putting your DC's name on their stuff

Instead of not calling the child by their name, we should be having ongoing conversations with our child about safety and not going to ANYONE we don't know. My friend recently did speak to her child and then had a mock role play with her friend that her child didn't know and the child refused and ran away. I think this is MUCH more impt. than not calling child by his/her name! JMO though!
