PSA: Safety in local shopping center
On Thursday evening after a very long day of going from one job to another and then to my parents home and finally the gym, I had to stop and pick up one item at Michaels Craft Store in Bayshore. It is in the Gardner Manor Mall shopping Center.
My car had my laptop, my gym bag, and my school bag in it.
After exactly 7 minutes of "shopping" I came out to a car with windows smashed and everything ngone. Three other cars were also broken into.
The cops said they write 15 reports a week in that very shopping center and that 15 was the miniumum. They also said a woman was mugged there two days earlier.
I am not sure why they aren't letting the public know that this is a dangerous area to be at night, although it was early, but I have to let you ladies/gentlemen know. I wouldn't go there alone especially at night and make sure there is NOTHING in your car.
I even lost my engagement ring because when I workout I take it off and forgot to put it back on before getting out of the car. Please learn from my very big mistake and don't go there. It's not worth it.

Oh man...I'm sorry. People really suck! And you're right...the public should know about this.

Wow Tracy, I didn't know that their were so many problems in that shopping center. To think that I (along with many others) frequent there.
Do they have any leads? Is there video in the parking lot?
I know you were in Michael's but I recall their being signs in the Target parking lot about video. I don't know if it goes to where you were parked.

The shopping center with the new Home Goods? When I lived in West Islip, I went there 4 times a week! That's where the local Target and King Kullen are. I'm really surprised to hear it's gone downhill lately. That's so scary - I'm so sorry you lost all that stuff.

Re: PSA: Safety in local shopping center
I'm sorry you lost your stuff! I'm glad at least that your pocketbook wasn't stolen too, with your credit cards.
It's always on my mind, especially in movie theater parking lots, that there are people sitting there scoping you out and the minute you go inside a store, they hit.
The only things I ever leave in plain view are the baskets in the back seat that have maps, ice scrapers, etc. in them. Whenever I'm leaving a store with shopping bags and I know I'm going to make another stop, I hide them from being seen from the windows.

Re: PSA: Safety in local shopping center
So sorry that happened to you! DH is very surprised that they would have over 700 reports in a year and they haven't stepped up security in the evening. I go during the daytime 95% of the time and always see a security car or two driving around the parking lot.
This is a good reminder to not leave anything valuable in the car.

Re: PSA: Safety in local shopping center
That's horrible! So sorry!
After my friend's laptop was stolen from her car while we were at Happy Hour, I always make sure to lock everything in the trunk whenever I stop somewhere after work. I figure if they look in and see nothing of value they won't break in.
thanks for the reminder!!
