FDA Urges Consumers Not to Purchase or Use Certain Gel-Filled Teethers
Products found to contain bacteria; voluntary nationwide recall underway

Luv N’ Care Ltd. of Monroe, La., is initiating a nationwide recall of gel-filled teethers with the brand names “Nuby,” “Cottontails” and “Playschool,” because the liquid inside the gel-filled teethers has been found to contain Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans bacteria in the gel.

Although these bacteria generally do not cause illness in adults, infants and children with weakened immune systems can experience stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and uncommonly more serious disease, if the teether becomes punctured and they ingest the liquid gel.

Consumers who have teethers with the brand names and UPC Codes listed below should immediately stop using them and discard or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall includes the following products:

The firm voluntarily recalled the products after learning that the FDA found Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans in the gel in samples from two lots collected by the FDA.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The company distributed the products through retail outlets nationwide. The products have also been found to be marketed on the Internet. The products are packaged in a plastic bubble on a printed card and can be identified by the UPC Codes listed above.

The company has ceased production and distribution of the products and is notifying its distributors to return the products. Consumers are urged to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-256-2399 ext. 3106 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time.

Adverse reactions experienced with the use of this product may be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail or by fax.

I have two playskool ones.. But, I can't find any numbers on them!

Wait.. is there a difference between
"PlaySkool"
and "playschool"??

We have the keys too.

It also looks like all Nuby Icy Bites also got recalled- which totally SUCKS because those are the only ones DD likes!

I just looked at the pkg for our keys. I kept it, I try to keep all the cardboards for things such as this or care instructions.

I am probably not going to give her gel teethers ever again. The other day was the first day I gave those keys or any gel teether, and it will likely be the last.

I always think...WHAT might be in that water inside??? Now I know I wasn't crazy for thinking that.

ETA - No, I was wrong. Ours were recalled too.

if you have one of the teethers with the animal heads and teether bodies you will find the UPC on the tag. We have a piggy one and I saw it was recalled. We have the pretzel too that came from the medical kit. Ugh! I hope BRU takes these back!

Ok...just spoke with a NUBY rep. She called me back.

Told me that it is a voluntary recall. And that the bacteria can generally only harm immunocompromised infants/children (HIV, CANCER, Etc).

And that it MAY not be in all lots, but they are recalling them all. And that you best be sure that almost ANY gel teether MAY contain this, even if it a different maker as they are often made in the same place.

So be prepared for more recalls. That's why I am storing them away to return them if they are recalled or if not I am just throwing them out. Never again.

I don't care if it can't likely harm my child. Here we are buying these to avoid BPA and we get bacteria? I am done with them. She will chew on her hands or a wet rag, not this crap.

In addition, this is why I have a bag full in my fridge and never gave them. The thought of the gel made me uncomfy. And I am so tired of this crap from China but it seems EVERYTHING is made in China. Especially almost all the kiddie stuff.

ITA also, we had one that literally leaked the first second we got it from the package and that made me totally stop and think about that gel, we had the keys and I just threw them out, the gel always made me apprehensive not to mention the fact that so many toys and things are still made in China...

FYI I just spoke with the customer relations lady at nuby and they are mailing me a prepaid return envelope and will refund me the price of the teether from BRU plus NY sales tax! Woo Hoo!
