Awesome--more places for people to slam on their brakes as soon as the light hits yellow

Re: PSA- they installed a new red light camera
That is a stupid place!! They are going to catch so many people there..I hate that light it turns so quickly..also because some people are rushing to get to the hospital I am sure they are going to say screw the fine and blow through it anyway!!

if your heading east its hard to see if your going over the hill with trucks in front of you. but now I will just drive a lot slower so I don't have too.
Leave lots of room when driving in that area so in case someone does slam on the brakes

Re: PSA- they installed a new red light camera
I figured as much yesterday when I saw the flashes going off while I was in line waiting to make a left from Nicolls onto 347.
The issue, though, comes when the ambulances go through and they change the cycles of the lights. Those trying to make a left are scre*wed because the left turn arrow remains red for up to 3 light cycles and the traffic mounts on Nicolls Road heading south! When the Univ. (for the most part) closed at 5pm and all employees/students leave, it's horrible!

does anyone else find them dangerous? im always worried about them and ive seen people SLAM on their brakes to try to avoid going throught the intersection on a yellow, nearly causing an accident.

I was told by ambulance drivers they can't actually do that

Re: PSA- they installed a new red light camera
I've seen them do it for that intersection, and for the one at Main Street in Smithtown at the corner of 112.
I believe there has to be a sensor installed on the traffic light, and that particular ambulance has to have equipment on it too, in order to change it when they approach.

Yes they can. There is a device that can be put on to the ambulance that can change the light from red to green in the direction the ambulance is heading. The purpose is so that the ambulance can avoid going through red lights as much as possible. Opticom
I used to volunteer as an EMT and our ambulances were equipped with this.

Maybe in the city but I don't know any on LI
considering the flash and $ they generate I'd don't think they are. it costs a lot to put them up and install them for them not to work. the man power used to install something that doesn't even work is silly. sorry I don't buy that statement

The "locals" get use to them because we know the camera is there and we saw the flash.
The problem is for those who don't know about the cameras.
We have had quite a few accidents here in Nassau (Jerusalem Ave and Old Country Rd as an example). Lot of cars "assume" the person will go ahead at the yellow light so they can go at red and they just slam and rear end cars who stops in front of them. It's mostly from people who don't know about the cameras.
All the "locals" stop. Trust me!!!!

Oh no! They will send you a ticket. They sent tickets to people who turned right on red lights here in Nassau. Some people don't even want to turn right on red because of that. Pi$$ a lot of people off but people who live locally don't even beep the horn anymore for someone who refused to turn right on red. We know about the cameras.

So how would that work if cars HAVE TO move out of the way to let an ambulance go ahead? They might have to pass the "stop line" that engages the camera and get a ticket.

Re: PSA- they installed a new red light camera
I saw some crazy stuff at intersections of people who didn't want to make a left cause the light changed quickly, i have seen intersections blocked because of this
I also know where the cameras are and I drive like an A$$ when i go through them. I actually get down to about 5-10 mph while approaching so i have enough time to slam on brakes
My sister got 2 right turn on red tickets even though Right on red was allowed

That's the worst--I've sat there trying to make that left onto 347 for literally 4 lights!

Re: PSA- they installed a new red light camera
This just happened to us this evening at this intersection and I am sure we will be getting a ticket. We were slowing down but the guy in back of us was driving really fast so DH sped up to make the light and it turned as we were going through it. I can only imagine how much this ticket will be.
