Psychological evaluation... What to expect?
My 3 year old DD is being evaluated for speech. We had the speech therapist here last week and she said she should qualify without a problem. In her words, "She's a mess."
Now, the psychologist is coming on Thursday to evaluate her. What can I expect from this evaluation? What do they do? My dd understands pretty much everything but pretty much no one understands her so I'm not sure what they will e testing for and how they will "grade" her, so to speak.

Re: Psychological evaluation... What to expect?
We had the eval done by the speech therapist, Special Needs person and psychologist. honestly, they pretty much all did the same things to see how my DD could do, say, interact, understand, motor skills, etc. They all had different ways of grading certain activities but it was the same general "play" observation that they had her do. We pretty much knew by the end of the eval how she did and got the unofficial news that we'd be getting services and within a day or two we got the official score and started setting up services

Re: Psychological evaluation... What to expect?
What is typically done is a cognitive assessment, then a behavior screening and adaptive behavior assessment if needed. The cognitive assessment is standard and is an IQ (intelligence) test. Feel free to FM me with any further questions.

Re: Psychological evaluation... What to expect?
Thank you very much for your replies!
I guess part of the reason I'm nervous is because I KNOW she needs speech, but in the back of my mind I'm scared that there will be something more "wrong" with her than a basic language delay.
Thank you!!

Thank you!!
My 2 year old qualified and is currently receiving services for speech. He has already made great progress in the 5 weeks he has been getting help!
Our evaluation was very similar to what the PP's described. I also, was concerned that he may have other issues. But, he was was either average or above for all of the other areas except for not talking! SO it was a relief for me!
BTW- that person could have shown more sensitivity to you about your child. I don't think calling them a "mess" is helpful at ALL. I wish you the best and hope that the services help your DD!

I don't have any experience- but I had to agree with this!! How terrible of her to say that!
Good Luck!

Even though I agree the evaluator shouldn't have said that, DD IS pretty much a mess, and I really should have requested an evaluation much earlier. I'm having a certain amount of guilt over that.
The evaluator felt that shes having major phonological issues (theres a whole host of sounds she doesn't say, she drops the middle and end sounds of most words, etc), AND a lisp, AND she suggested I get a second opinion from an ENT because she thinks there may be something structurally wrong as well.
It was a lot to take in. And I never even noticed she had a lisp

Re: Psychological evaluation... What to expect?
All of the evals seemed pretty similar to me. The psychologist talked to my DS and played some games with him to test his spatial sense and his cognitive ability.
If you think something else might be wrong, write down your concerns. The psychologist listened to a very long list I made and that was part of her report to CPSE.
Don't feel guilty. It's very difficult to go through all these evaluations.
