Public Administration Masters???
Hi Ladies, Just a general question. I have started in a Masters Program and have decided to do Public Administration. I know the degree can pretty much cross all Business aspects, but I was wondering if anyone has an MBA/PA and if you do what do you do. I'm just trying to get some ideas.
TIA

Re: Public Administration Masters???
I have my Master's in it, it did not help me at all to get a decent job. I am now payng off my student loan, and I am not even in the field I chose to study.

Really... That's what I am scared of... Do you think you would have found a better job in a different field?

Re: Public Administration Masters???
I have my MPA and I am currently not working in my field. However, I am planning on switching to my field after I return from my maternity leave...I probably will stay in the private sector due to $$$$$. Eventually though I will go on to work for the gov't.

I definantely think so. I am thinking of getting another degree... in nursing. It really stinks that I have this big student loan and the $$ does not pay the way it should be in the field. IMHO, save the $$ and get a masters in something else. HTH

Re: Public Administration Masters???
A close friend of mine has an MPA from UC Berkley. She went on to be in the Presidential Management Intern Program and worked with the Department of the Navy. She hated it. Now she lives in Alaska performing some environmental work but has big loans to pay off for a program she doesn't use.

Re: Public Administration Masters???
Individuals entering the Public Administration field should really not look into making big $$ in this field bc this field is sort of like "civil servant" field, but there is an opportunity to move up and make an enjoyable carreer out of it. If there is a chance that you will run up high student loans, then I strongly suggest that you choose a different field that you like where there is $$ to make...

Re: Public Administration Masters???
My friend is currently doing an MPA at Baruch - CUNY - I'll get some info on it or pass her email address to you if you'd like.
Agreed on what Sylvia said - it's not about the $$$$.

Re: Public Administration Masters???
A close friend of mine does. She works for the Dept of Transportation in Albany. (She is originally from Rochester). If its any consolation, she makes the same salary up there in Albany as I do here in NY. Not sure if thats good for her or bad for me!

Re: Public Administration Masters???
I am about THIS close to completing my Masters in Public Administration. I hope to be walking in May!!!!
First, it's about personal fulfillment in this field.
Second, the program I am in crosses so many fields between nursing, business leaders, nonprofit, and public sector. It teaches you about leadership, communication, organizational management and emerging technology.
Third, I am not "in the field" anymore but plan to return to the public sector (or public sector "work" in the private sector) someday. I previously worked in state gov't.
I wholely recommend the program, but FM me if you want more information.
