Pugs???

We are thinking of getting a pug. Can anyone give me any and all information on that breed.
Shedding? size? care? also do all pugs always have such loud labored breathing (a friend of mine use to have one and that is all i can remember---loud breathing)
TIA

Re: Pugs???

I love my pug cause he a mush. He loves attention. He does shed and snore though. Cheiwe is about 20 pds. Here's some more info I found online....

Are you looking for a dog that will make you laugh? Then a Pug may be good for you - they are natural clowns and show offs.

Are you looking for a dog that is good with children? Then a Pug may be good for you as they seem to consider children to be "Pug-sized" people.

Are you looking for a dog as a companion to your kids, to run after them on their bikes up the street? You should pass on Pugs - their sensitivity to heat and small size makes that almost a certain death situation.

Do you want a small watch dog for an apartment situation? MAYBE a Pug can work - but it's not usual. Most Pugs won't know a stranger in their entire lives, let alone recognize a burglar.

Do you want an easy to train dog? Pugs don't normally fall into that category in general - because usually they want very much to please you, but sometimes it takes a Pug longer than other breeds to understand what you want (or maybe, longer for you to understand what they're going to do!).

Do you want a short haired dog because it will shed less? Then run, don't walk, away from the Pug breed. This breed sheds copious amounts, usually seasonally.

Do you want a dog that's almost human-like in personality? Then consider a Pug, as Pugs have more personality than they know what to do with!

Please look into rescuing one or go to a reputable breeder. Stay away from pet stores.

Here are some links to rescues:

That is a very hard but very good thing to consider. What kinds of characteristics are you looking for in a dog?

Re: Pugs???

My husband really wants a dog, but he wants a lab. Even though I think they are beautiful dogs I just dont feel like we have the room or yard for a dog that size. Also I really do not want a dog that sheds. So I was trying to get my husband to compromise to a small dog and then he mentioned a pug---I think they are adorable but the fact they shed soooo much is a big negative. I know I am going to be the one who has to clean up and vacuum ect.....and I would like the dog to be good with children (for when we have them). A few breeds we have looked into are maltese,
shi tzhu, bischon, yorkie terrier are a few. I just feel it is a big decision and I want to do as much research as possible before we decide.
Any other information would be great
Thank you all so much

Re: Pugs???

I totally commend you for doing the research and making sure that you have a good fit. Too many people impulse buy a dog & then find later down th road that it is really not a good match. You are already so far ahead of the game!

If you'd like a happy medium, I like Spaniels (Cocker Spaniels & Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in particular are very trainable & great with kids.) Ther is a bit of grooming, but they can also easily be kept in a puppy cut & they do not shed all that much.

I came up with a few that will match your grooming and also will be good with kids in the future:
Bichon Frise
Shetland Sheepdog
Poodle
and Maltese

Here is a good website to help you decide:

Re: Pugs???

When I lived with my parents I had a pug. She had the best personality and was a wonderful companion. Unfortunately she loved to eat and my grandma loved to feed her. When she died she was only 8. She had a multitude of health problems most of which were because of her weight. I sometimes wonder if it was because she was from a "backyard breeder". I didn’t know anything about backyard breeders or puppy mills back then.
Everything that they say this breed is prone to she had. She had to have her anal glands expressed regularly (gross), chronic ear infections, needed drops daily in her eyes, took over a year to housebreak, had colds and even skin cancer at one point. She shed heavily year round. She ultimately died of pneumonia- in October.
I’m not saying not to get this breed, Betsy unfortunately was just not a healthy dog. Do your research though on what type of dog is best for you- not just what looks cute. I found this site to be helpful:
