PUMPING moms... question?

i've been pumping since birth i pump every 4-5 hours i usually get about 4-5oz EACH time i pump...

here's my question.. when i got back to work.. i can;t pump i work in the food industry.. can i eventually train myself not to pump from 7am-4pm then pump for the rest of the day without loosing milk supply? i dont pump now 11pm till 6am... i would be pumping at 6am,4-5pm, then again before bedtime 8-9pm?

could this work? i know i would probubly still supplement with some formula in each bottle with the breastmilk?

Re: PUMPING moms... question?

I don't think your supply would stay the same. I would imagine it would decrease since the body works on the supply and demand theory. If you aren't demanding it, your body will stop supplying it. Are you sure you can't find a place to to pump at work? I think by law all companies have to allow you the opportunity to pump.

BTW, you had me cracking up with your opening statement... "I've been pumping since birth." I know what you meant but it sounded like you've been pumping your whole life Chat Icon

I don't believe you're supposed to mix breast milk and formula in the same bottle.
But as per the original question... if you don't start training yourself to that schedule before you go back to work, you may find yourself uncomfortably engorged at work. You may find that your supply decreases, but that may be ok. Some breast milk is better than none. And like I said, you don't want to be stuck at work miserably uncomfortable.

Re: PUMPING moms... question?

Yes you can! Once I got into my pumping routine I pumped 3 times a day...when I woke up at around 7 am, once again at 6 pm and again at 11 pm. My body was trained (in a sense) that way, I did this for 8 months religiously and I pumped 20+ oz a day. I didn't give Noah any formula at all until he was 8 months old.

I don't know how I did it, I just stuck to that routine religiously and it worked fantastically!!!

Re: PUMPING moms... question?

When I went back to work I only could pump on my lunch break, so it was also a big time period between pumping. Then later on I eventually stopped pumping and just breastfed in the morning and at night, then finally just at night. (I supplemented with formula also). I think as long as you get yourself gradually used to the change you won't feel too much discomfort. You may have a decreased supply, especially if you also give formula, but as the above poster mentioned, any breastmilk is better than none.
