Puppy biting-HELP!

My puppy has all of a sudden become much more comfortable with us and has taken to nipping us and everything else. We got the bitter apple spray for the furniture etc. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i know puppies chew etc. but how do you get them out of that habit. he often goes to bite our toes and hands, he tries to chew on my clothes. i have tried telling him NO! and holding his muzzle. i then give him a chew toy to chew on but it isnt making much of a difference. HELP!

Re: Puppy biting-HELP!

I would recommend that you do not hold the dog's muzzle. It can, in some breeds cause them to act aggressively, just as playing tug-of-war can. Seemingly innocent, but it can trigger an instinct that you do not want.

Empty a can and fill it with coins. Shake it or toss is (gently) near the puppy when he goes to nip.

Fill an empty spray bottle (found cheaply at many drug stores) with water and spray near the dogs nose when he goes to nip.

Good Luck

ETA: If I remember correctly, you have a Lab/Poodle mix. Both of those breeds are chewers. The Lab puppy will want to play, so make sure to get some good time outside as well.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we have a goldendoodle. part of the problem (I think) is that he doesn't have all his shots yet so we cant walk him around the neighborhood-hence he has tons of pent up energy. We are looking forward to being able to get him out on long walks to excercise him. We do play with him several times a day and try to tire him out, but it seems puppys have an unlimited supply of energy! i will definitely try the can of coins and water bottle, thanks for the suggestions!

Right, that time before the vaccinations is tough. I also might try puppy massage to help calm him, but he might still be too young. Start at the neck, then the ears, then the throat, etc. It not only can help to calm the dog, but it also will make it easier for you to clean his ears & teeth in the future.

If the dog rolls over easily a good belly rub is also great. Just stay away from their kidney area (right above the hips). It excites them & can actually cause them to pee!

These two tools worked for us. Make sure he has plenty of chew toys too. Good luckChat Icon

Re: Puppy biting-HELP!

We went through the same thing with Bella, I had cuts and scratches all over my arms! We used the bitter apple, and when she would bite us, we would say "ouch" and walk away and not play with her anymore. She out grew the biting by about 5-6 months, and that is when most of her baby teeth had fallen out. Oh, we also froze a wet wash cloth and that really helped with her biting and we gave her tons of ice cubes to chew on! Good Luck! It will get better.

They are great suggestions, thank you! I tried the can filled with coins, it seemed to scare him for a minute and then he attacked me again, and tried to get the top off the can! I am going to try the spray bottle, I know he is not being bad, he has too much energy and he cant get rid of it b/c he cant go out and take long walks yet. I just hate to think that he is developing bad habits that will be hard to break. It seems I can't get him into any training until he is about 14 weeks so we have some time to go! I love him and i want him to be well behaved so that people are happy to be around him!

Re: Puppy biting-HELP!

I got bit today from Jasmine. She usually nips and I correct but she bit down and her teeth left marks. I yelped like a dog, I heard it is supposed to be like a dog yelp. She stopped and stared. I told her NO! I then put her in the kitchen, time out for her!

The can of coins does work. My puppy did the same thing but if you shake the can close to him by his ear... he's not a fan at all. And when i do this, i say "no bark."

Also, you can use the bitter apple on your hands. That's what we did. I would spray some shots of it into my hands and then rub it in. Problem fixed. He stopped biting them.

Also, when he goes to bite you, tell him "no" and give him an appropriate chew toy. Then when he starts chewing on it, praise him. After a while... he'll get it and the biting does start to fade away. Chat Icon
