Re: Putting DC To Sleep At Night - What Method Do You Use

We use the "drop and leave" method. She has so many toys in there...we just put her down, give a kiss and leave the room. Sometimes she'd cry for a bit, others play, others goes right to sleep. Lately though with a new baby in the house it's a disaster. Hoping it gets better soon.Chat Icon

We rock dd to sleep. It takes 10-15 min. before she falls asleep. It gives my dh sometime alone with her since he often works to after 8pm. However, when she wakes up in the middle of the night, she puts herself back to sleep.

I literally just lay her down in the crib. Whether she's exhausted or wide awake, I put her down and she goes to sleep right away.

I rock DD and give her a bottle. She'll usually fall asleep and then I'll put her in the crib...

I don't worry too much about spoiling her at this point - for me, it's our special time together...my Mom did this with me as a baby...we'd sit in the rocking chair, she'd read to me while I drank my bottle and then she'd lay me in bed...I think till I was about 2 or 3....

Sometimes she will fall asleep while having her bottle, other times she will eat abd be wide awake. But we have started to just put her in her crib and let her put herself to sleep.

I don't think you are spoiling Ella. That is your bedtime routine with her, so how can tha tbe spoiling her? Chat Icon

Thanks ladies!!! I will rock Ella for 10-15 mins and then she is sound asleep. She doesn't fight or fuss so that is why I am doubting that I am spoiling her. When she does wake up in the middle( which is VERY rare) of the night she will put herself back to sleep without us have to anything.

Thanks for sharing your method and your insight with me.

Yes, you are spoiling her because she haas now been accustomed to you rocking her, even if it's only for a short while....sorry Opal but that's what my doc told me when I started doing it.

He told me at 6 months is when they start to develop dependencies on things like that.

Since birth we have been putting Gavin to sleep awake in his crib with his mobile on. He stays awake for a bit and then falls right to sleep no problem. I almost feel like he's dependent on the mobile, but for now I'm OK with that.

I would maybe start weaning her, I knowit's hard, I didn't want to do it either, but fortunately Gavin decided for me because he won't let me hold him close after his bottle anymore Chat Icon he gets VERY restless..

I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Thanks Gina for your honesty!Chat Icon I am happy that Gavin did not give you a hard time. Such a good boy!

Our routine is 7:30 I nurse him, 8PM bath, then PJs, then I nurse him in his glider and read him a story while I'm nursing him. Into the crib awake, turn on mobille and sleep sheep. Then I kind of hang out b/c he likes to roll to his belly - once he gets in position, I give him the paci and leave. Sometimes he's upset so I shush him and rub his back.

Opal, I think if you enjoy the cuddle time and rocking Ella to sleep, then you should do it. If it is what works for you, then don't let anyone else tell you different. Everyone has a different tolerance for what is 'spoiled' - maybe Ella will need to be rocked or cuddled for a longer period of time as she grows up - that's not such a bad thing, right? I doubt she'll want to be cuddled when she's a teenager so I don't think you're ruining her, LOL. Do what you feel comfortable with and wean her when you are ready to do it, not when someone else says you should. It's so funny how everyone else likes to weigh in on what works for us individually. It's a pet peeve of mine.

I would start to put her bed when she is sleepy but awake. I still rock my DD at 18 mnths old but she goes in wide awake. I don't see the rocking as spoiling her but it is good to teach them to soothe themselves to sleep.

Re: Putting DC To Sleep At Night - What Method Do You Use

I used to rock but one day i was just letting him sit on my lap in the glider. I saw that he was sleepy so i gave him the paci. He laid back and in about 5 mins was out. And this is what we have been doing ever since

I know i have to get him to go to sleep on his own but i just enjoy holding him for a while Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Putting DC To Sleep At Night - What Method Do You Use

My method is put Kerri in her bed, say goodnight and leave. I have done this since early on and she always puts herself to sleep. If you enjoy rocking her then go for it, I just knew I didn't want to do that for who knows how long

Re: Putting DC To Sleep At Night - What Method Do You Use

Because I'm going back to work, the doctor recommended beginning to "Ferberize", but not just throw her down and walk away if she's screaming. However I have to say, I'm so amazed at DD lately. She's been falling asleep on the last bottle of the night (between 8 and 9pm) or soon after since I keep her upright (I guess that's rocking her) for about 20 minutes so she doesn't spit up... and she's staying asleep until about 7am! I was shocked the first few nights and kept checking up on her. If rocking her was putting her into a solid sleep then I'm all for it, but now I'm finding even if she isn't quite asleep on the bottle I'll put her down drowsie/croggy... and it's like I shut the light and she knows it's time to sleep - I'll check on her a half hour later and she's sleeping - I've actually reached into the crib to make sure she's breathing and checked her pulse. She's just gotten to be a good sleeper and able to fall asleep on her own as long as the lights are off (we keep a nightlight on in one outlet by the door). One night when a few days after we first started this she cried at about 3am for 8 minutes... I set in my mind that I'd let her cry for 10, but she fell asleep after 8 minutes. Since then she seems to get that during the day we'll respond right away to her, but at night she needs to try to sleep. She doesn't use a pacifier, but she has found her thumb so I think she'll suck her thumb to get herself back to sleep. I'm not "in love" with the thumb thing (I remember my sister sucking her's raw as a baby), but we'll work on that in time, for right now I'm proud of her for soothing herself. Granted, I'm anticipating that when teething starts we may see some tough nights again, but we'll take it as it comes. I'm just knocking on wood that she keeps up the good sleep. We are loving our sleep again.

Re: Putting DC To Sleep At Night - What Method Do You Use

As long as YOU don't think rocking her to sleep is a problem, then it's not. I LOVED rocking Ava to sleep. It was my favorite part of the day. I would rock her until she was just about to fall asleep and then put her down. I did that until almost 6 months old. She learned to fall asleep on her own at that point, but around 8 months, she started to not want to go to bed, just stay up and play. She didn't respond anymore to rocking or anything else we did, so we tried CIO. 3 nights later, she was back to putting herself to sleep and never stopped.
I long for those days when I used to rock her to sleep. I really do. Enjoy it. If it works for you and her, that's all that matters.Chat Icon

just started cio last week - though it was a bit rough, he has finally slept through the night (1st time consistently for the last 8 months) and he wakes up happy. last night and tonight he went down w/o crying at all. so far it is working for us, though i felt bad i know it will be for the best :)

do what works for you! i couldn't do 3-5 times up each night, it was driving me crazy and i'm on summer vacation, it had to get fixed before going back to work
