Putting Newborn to Sleep Magic Trick - one last time!
I used to do this all the time, when DS hit 3 months I abandoned the swing, and started to wean off the swaddle. I am trying to teach him to self soothe. He also only recently started taking pacifier, but I think he's just chewing on it for his teething.
Anyway, he was cranky and I have a cold, so I didn't really want to hold him too much, or too close and he's just wasn't getting this "soothe yourself to nap" business. So, I remembered my old trick and it again worked like a charm.
step 1. swaddle, and swaddle tight, leave legs open step 2. calm the baby: put the baby on its side, shush them, swing/jiggle them, and stick a paci in the mouth (if they'll take it) step 3: put them in the swing, strap them in and turn it up on high step 4: about 10 minutes later, gently take them out and put them in the crib
Thank you Dr. Karp, for helping me make my baby The Happiest Baby on the Block!

Just wondering. Is there any reason to wean a baby out of a swaddle? My DS is almost 6 months and I still swaddle him. I was planning on doing it until he could physically tell me not to.

only did it cause he was waking trying to wrestle out of it like crazy, and I suspected it was the only crying because he felt confined. I tried it a few times without and he didn't sleep well, and then, like magic one night, he slept without it, and woke up quietly. I came to his crib around the time he wakes and I find him smiling at me. No cries, no wrestling. That was the end of the swaddle for night time sleep.
I still use it to soothe him though, if he's cranky and its been a life saver during this funny teething period.
