Ques about wills and whom to leave children to??
DH and I are working on our wills this month and we're having those difficult conversations about whom we're choosing to raise our children if we both die.
If both parents die, what health insurance do the surviving children fall under? Will our estates/trust funds take care of the health insurance or will they be covered under their caregivers' plans?
I'm asking because we have three options for whom to leave the children to -- my ILs who are older, but have excellent stability and live locally (same school district and town) plus I agree with their morals AND they are financially stable (ie health ins for life).
My cousin and her DH live close, but are self-employed so I worry they would have another burden of paying for healthcare, too.
My SIL and BIL live in New England but would gladly inherit our house to raise the children in.....
Does anyone have an answer??

I'm not certain, but I think unless you specifically provide for health insurance under a trust or similar instrument set up specifically under your will, the guardian would have to find a way to insure your kids, whether it be under their plans or buying new plans for them.

I would think that insurance would fall under SS Survivor Benefits but I don't know. I would speak to an attorney who can answer these questions for you.

I agree
And I wouldn't unless you had NO other options, choose grandparents to be DC's guardians.

again, these are tough conversations -- didn't think it'd be so hard to make these decisions but OMG, I want to put my head in the sand and not think about it. I know that's horribly irresponsible and I would hate to not leave my children securely with someone and have the children not be sure that's what mommy and daddy wanted.
it's going to be very hard.
