Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

Has anyone ever heard of a specific test being done in a lab always coming out off? Lower than normal compared to other labs? ALWAYS?

I was tested twice for something, both times coming up deficient and when retested at a hospital, it came out normal. But it's not accurate again as normal bc I am pregnant and it throws off this specific test.

FOr anyone in the medical profession, does that sound right?

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

Laurie can you be more specific about what kind of test it is?

If it is a test run on a machine, there are always controls run on each machine before they run patient samples to make sure they are running properly.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

This is a clotting factor test-VII. It was done twice at QUest and I came up defiecient, then once at South Nassau and came out normal, however I am pregnant so your blood has higher levels when you are pregnant so you don't bleed out during delivering.

This really is not a definite answer for you, but my MIL works in the health insurance industry, and it recently came up in conversation that some health insurance companies are dropping Quest as a covered lab provider because their test results are many times not accurate.

If their results are not accurate, what are they doing to fix it!

My insurance dropped Quest. I wonder if this is the reason?

Probably - I dont remember the specific insurance companies she listed. When the family of old people starts talking about aches, pains, medicare and health insurance I half zone out. But I do remember her saying companies have dropped them because I wondered how many companies have to drop them before they would fix whatever the problem is.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

I'm always a little leary of Quest Diagnostics. A lady I work with had a biopsy done- and it came back positive for cancer. So had surgery to remove the mass, went thru radiation, and then they sent her a letter saying "oooops- we messed your biopsy sample up with someone elses and you really never had cancer."

Scary stuff.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

THAT IS WHAT THEY JUST DID TO ME!!!!! Not with Cancer, but I had been going to DR after DR for a problem, got to an RE who tested and said yep, you have this, go to a Hematologist...go to the hemotologist, he says yep, Quest results said you have this. Then 10 months later, he tells me oooopppps, Quest sux! Let me send you here. So now it's normal... unfortunately the results may not be 100% right bc I am pregnant, so either way, I need to wait another year or so till my body gets back to normal to retest.

I have never heard this before, it's crazy and frustrating and completely unfair!

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

I don't know if this helps, but would your insurance cover the test being done at LIJ? You would have to have it sent to special hematology. I know the people who work there, that is where I would go.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

We don't go to Quest anymore...always inaccurate. They are just easy to get into and have many locations (if you are the first person they see)

We do all our testing via NSLIJ in house. Most of the time, our blood dr (hemotolagist - sp) will exam the blood right in front of us and see what is going on, etc...

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

Quest messed up my AFP reults - they said the results were abonormal -- because of my age, and nothing else. Meanwhile the Level II showed no problems at all. This is a "policy" that Quest has - women over 35 are automatically marked as abnormal for the AFP.

What then is the point of taking my blood??

My insurance and my OB dropped them.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

Yes, Quest has been making mistakes for years.. I guess recently more than ever. I used to work for an ob/gyn office. There was one very important blood test taken on a pregnant woman which came back positive. The next test was negative. There were other mix ups with that lab as well.

Re: Quest Diagnostics-medical professional question.

Thanks so much! I hate to wait 6 months but I guess I will go to LIJ and start looking for a hemotologist there...
